Requa Road is a paved road that climbs and winds 2.25 mile (3.6k) to the Klamath River Overlook, 650 feet (198m) above the Pacific Ocean. Unsuitable for RV’s and trailers, Requa Road heads west from the Redwood Hwy, US-101, north of the city of Klamath on the north side of the Klamath River. From the Klamath River Overlook at the end of the road, one is treated to views of the river and ocean with the possibility of whale sightings, provided it is not fogged in. Unfortunately, the four days we were in the area, the coast was fogged in the entire time; finally, on the last day, the fog thinned so we took the chance and drove to the overlook. Well the fog had not dispersed from the overlook so we were unable to see the beach or ocean below. But somehow the view was still interesting; the glowing sun trying to burn through the fog, the river disappearing into a giant fogbank as it approached the Pacific and the mist ebbing and flowing amongst wildflowers and flowering shrubs bordering the front of the overlook. Hoping the fog would dissipate further, we sat at the overlook’s picnic table, had a snack while we waited, enjoying the view we did have, and listening to the surf below and the distant calls of seabirds. The fog never did clear enough to see the ocean and in fact began to thicken so, thankful for what we were able to see, we moved on.
We drove down the road hoping to spy the Pacific Ocean and we were not disappointed. We found a park with restrooms and picnic tables and amazing views. This was our first view of the Pacific and it is majestic. We didn't see any whales, but we also didn't know what to look for! Take the drive, enjoy the view and trees.
We were there in late May and saw whales sporting in the surf just off the shore where the Klamath River mouth opens on the ocean. Beautiful vista.
You must take this drive especially at sunset. Wonderful views of ocean and river (see picture). Fun, short windy drive with lots of sharp turns. Combines very well with a gourmet dinner at the Requa Inn. Small parking area at top. Windy trail for hikers toward ocean. It also can be windy!
We were fortunate that although there were some clouds we had a spectacular view from the overlook of the mouth of the Klamath River. It was spectacular. There is also interesting Native American fishing community on this road, as well as very nice historic Requa Inn.
This road isn't for the faint of heart, but if you do manage to make it to the top at the overlook, you are rewarded with awesome vistas. The road is just wide enough for two cars to pass--that's is. There is also a delightful hotel about half-way up, which would have been an excellent place to have dinner. We stayed at the top, enjoying the scenery for over 30 minutes. It's a lovely site and well worth the trip to the top.
Drive up here if you are not behind the wheel of a large camper, the view is spectacular. We stumbled up this and saw whales, seals and the salmon running.
You need to drive up there to see the mouth of Klamath River meet the ocean. Beautiful view! Really interesting when the salmon are running and you can watch all the activity from there. Bring binoculars.
If you're in the area, don't miss this view of the Klamath River meeting the sea. We didn't see whales, but other people did. Patience pays off!
I couldn't do this drive last year in my 2wd because the unpaved road was very muddy and it's not the place I want to be slippin' & slidin'. But it is well worth the drive when the road is relatively dry.You reach the Klamath overlook via a very narrow, twisty and steep road that passes the charming, secluded, Historic Requa B&B which looks to be a gr8 stop for the night. The view from the summit to the mouth of the river meeting the ocean, and the shifting sands that sometimes block it's flow into the Pacific was awesome, even with light fog. Whales are often spotted, but none when I was there. There is also a steep trail down to the beach that several folks had just completed. It was quite windy & cool, so wear layers. There is even a bathroom. My pix don't do it justiceI also took the time to drive over to see the beach and overlook from sea level on the other side of the river. Go back to Hwy 101 , then across the river to the first exit for the Klamath Beach road. About 1/2 mile (?) there is a road on the left past the RV park that will take you up along a winding, one-way road that is very scenic, but not for the feint-of-heart! The alternative is shorter and just keep going straight to the Klamath turnaround near the beach.I just discovered that Trip Adviser has two listings for this as it's also under Klamath Overlook.
While we didn't get a great vista view because of fog at the time we were there, the view of the immediate area was still excellent.
What a wonderful view. However I don't suggest you do this road if you are scared of heights. I got amazing pictures from this area.
Requa Road leads to a beautiful views but is treacherous part of the time, washes out during storms and is one lane in many places.
This isn't all that far off the highway and the view is amazing! A nice place to get out into the fresh air and enjoy a great view before continuing on with your travels.
Don't miss this short side trip. The views were spectacular. Short, steep, paved road with a parking area and lookout at the top. Do it!
