we were staying at chester and tried to get to juniper lake, knowingly that it's an unpaved road, but we didn't think it will be that rough. we drove with our Toyota corolla for about 7 miles in the unpaved road (5 more miles to go) before we decided that it's too much, and we might get stuck there. I wish I had a review about the lake to share but didn't get there.
It's slow to get here but worth the drive. As soon as you leave the town of Chester, you drive on unpaved road the whole time. When we were there during the Labor Day weekend, we drove through heavy fog and light rain and we weren't sure if it was worth it to continue. By the time we got to the lake, he sun was out. The lake itself is beautiful but the short hike to Inspiration Point was quite memorable. You can see Mt Lassen, Juniper Lake and Mt Shasta at a distance.
We were staying at Drakesbad Guest Ranch and made the morning drive along the washboard road to Juniper Lake. A lovely view of Lassen Peak and quiet spot to explore.
Pristine, crystal-clear lake with beach. Gorgeous setting. The drive is a bit bumpy but it was worth it!
Small campground doesn't offer solitude but it's a lot quieter and better spread out than 90% of CA campgrounds. Some spots are right on the lake. Various hikes vary from very easy to pretty tough. Mt Harkness has great views. Road is pretty rough; forget trailers. Pit toilets were in pretty good shape.
Juniper Lake is a lovely place. Nice camping in the Southeast part of Lassen National Park. Seldom crowded.
It's a long bumpy drive but well worth the trip. The water is so clear you can see down to the bottom. It's very shallow along the shore and has a nice beach area and picnic tables. A nice day trip from Lake Almanor.
I found Juniper Lake to be magical. The water is warm and the most beautiful turquoise blue. You can see the bottom of the lake and it is clean and inviting. The primitive (outhouses & firepits) campgrounds are more than I ever expected to find in such a "visited" area. I found no garbage on the ground and it was sooo quiet. At 10:00 it is completley silent. There are 18 campsites and we actually found an open spot on labor day weekend. Most of the spots are right on the lake and it is very convenient for canoes and kayakes. You can bring your dogs, but they ask that you don't let them swim. There are numerous trail heads that start right in the campground. There is a lot to see and appreciate at this most serene spot. I went in June and July 2002. The weather was hot, but it was at least 20 degrees cooler than the valley. If you decide to camp at Juniper Lake, please remember to try to keep it the way it is. quiet, clean and friendly. There are recycling areas available which I found to be very kept up on and there are garbage receptacles. If everyone does their part, we can keep Juniper Lake a wonderful getaway for all of us to enjoy.
