Located along the main park road, just north of Lassen Volcanic’s south entrance station, the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, when completed in 2008, took over from the Loomis Museum as Lassen’s primary visitor center and is the park’s first year round visitor center and a significant upgrade in services. Open 9am-5pm daily from April through October and 9am-5pm Wednesday through Sunday the rest of the year, the visitor center is an excellent place to pick-up brochures, maps and current information from the rangers to assist you in your visit to the park. The visitor center also has an auditorium showing a well done film introducing the park, an interactive museum on the geology and ecology of the area, a nice gift shop, the park’s only real restaurant, a first aid station and large clean restrooms. Outside, there are a number of short paved walks with interpretive signs, benches and a large amphitheater. During our early August visit, we attended the excellent Dark Sky Astronomy Festival which was held in the amphitheater and about the visitor center grounds and was one of the highlights of our visit. The name Kohm Yah-mah-nee is the local Native American name for Lassen Peak and means “Snow Mountain”.
