We have driven to LA on HWY 5 about 40 times and I always wondered what Ft.Tejon was all about. This time, we stopped and we were pleasantly surprised. It is a hidden gem right on the 5. There might have been 5 people there while we were present. We are both history buffs, so to learn of the old Cavalry Fort, the self guided tour, with the access to the interior of the buildings and the true adobe buildings was fantastic. A great museum of artifacts, furniture, living quarters, uniforms, and weapons exists there. The informational displays are very good. You can just imagine what living in the mid to late 1800's was like at Ft. Tejon. Plus, if you stand by the chicken coop, the hens will come out and pay you a visit. Lots of photo opportunities and a learning experience. Next time we will hike up the hill to see what's up there.
Fort Tejon is an incredible example of a partially restored pre-Civil War US Cavalry Fort. With many different points of interest on the self-guided tour, Fort Tejon is one of California's secret gems.Joseph S.
You really should stop just to examine the old tree beneath which, it is said, Peter Lebec met his sad fate at the paws of a grizzly bear. The whole story is told at the small museum by the entrance. You will also find some good historical exhibits that are nicely tended. like the living quarters of the commandant and his lady. You can see what the soldiers' uniforms looked like. In good weather, this is a place for your kids to run around and stretch their legs. Also you can stick them in the carcel (jail) if you are so minded.
What a surprise to find this park along the highway. Especially on this day in which traveling through the pass in early december some snow still remained at the higher elevation. Was quiet and isolated to walk through on this day but very photogenic. What a great little historical park left for us to enjoy !
Took a pic nic lunch and enjoyed a couple of hours walking through the exhibits. It is extremely rare to see civil war uniforms in southern california, but they have them there. It is worth the stop to see the exhibits and find out about this historical location in So Cal
be sure to get flyers and handouts before you explore. the old shade trees and picnic tables make for a great place to break out your food
