So glad we chose to have lunch at this course on a perfect sunny day in December. It was a perfect break between winery visits. Great salads and sandwiches!!! Maybe will go back and play golf when weather is warmer
I am an NCGA member and this is my home course. But I have mixed feelings about the staff here. Good news first...The course is usually in perfect condition….this summer when most courses suffered from too little or too much water, Poppy's fairways and greens were unbeatable. But I played there today (12/21/14) and after the rains, the course is mushy almost everywhere and you better not miss a fairway because the long grass has not been tended and is so long that a pulled shot is absolutely predicable. We finished at 4 pm…wanted to talk over our game at the grill/bar but could find no one in sight to help us with a drink. I went to the pro shop and found a young man looking bored behind the register, asked him if the restaurant and bar were closed and he said he didn't know.I asked if he could call someone and help us out with a drink and he just was not interested in helping. Mind you, there was no customer anywhere but me who was asking for help. After 10-15 min, a gal walked out and told us they were closing in 10 minutes ( 4 pm) but she would serve us. Wow. We took our drinks outside because they would be kicking us out of the restaurant in 10 min anyway. Then she came out and told us she was locking the door to the restaurant but we could leave through the pro shop. This is a strange place. Golfers like to come in after a round and have something to eat and drink. Don't count on it here. If you want to play in summer, it's a nice place unless the wind is howling and the temps aren't too hot. The practice range is the best anywhere in the bay area. But the restaurant staff acts like you are an imposition. I don't get that. Like I said, hit and miss.
Fast greens, lots of fairway hills. Beautiful views, nice carts and marshals who do not let anyone linger!
I used to go to Poppy Ridge for lunch occasionally. The food was always good and the view from the restaurant is beautiful, but things have changed. The food is just ok but not as tasty as before and the same old tired menu. The service is horrible even IF you can get someone to wait on you. I won't be returning.
This is a great course. My husband played it while I rode along with him in the cart (I'm a bit of a novice yet and this is not the course to play on if you're just starting out). Gorgeous views of the Livermore wine valley; challenging holes; LOTS of bunkers and sand traps that will test your accuracy. It can get HOT out here.... bring ample water, SPF and shade.
This is my home course so I know it extremely well. As noted, 27 holes of championship course in a beautiful pastoral setting. Course is links style with fast, true greens that normally role at 10+ on Stimp. Practice facilities are really excellent with plenty of well tended grass, practice bunkers, putting and chipping greens. Practice balls are usually in good shape. Pro shop folks are friendly but professional (very little extraneous chat), head pro-Jeff, is terrific and gives lessons and club fittings. This course is an unmatched value for the facilities, condition of the facilities, equipment sales (stock and custom) and the opportunities for quality help in the Bay Area, especially if you are an NCGA member. Very few negatives about Poppy- but #1 is pace of play. Since it is a popular course (290 persons played on 6/14), you can experience a 5+ hour round as I did. Part of the pace of play issue is not only the number of people on the course, but the non-enforcement of appropriate tees matched to a golfers handicaps/skill level. Marshals can be few and far between here, and this is not an "beginners/easy" course. They really need to get the 10+ index folks to move up to the appropriate tees as Poppy can be very unfriendly if you are not in the fairway. Just a thought. Second negative is that the bar/rest area is frequently closed for private events after a late round. Often, no 19th hole opportunity. Suggest you bring your own if playing late or stop off at one of the several wineries located close to property.
With the new bunkering in place Poppy Ridge has elevated the golf to one of the best courses in the Bay Area. For the price, especially for NCGA members, it continues to offer good value especially with midweek specials for seniors, juniors, and 27 holes. Although most players ride the course it is walkable and locals use the unofficial 'shortcuts' from green to the next tee. Always a good test of golf coupled with a beautiful club house and restaurant the NCGA continues to get it right in Livermore.
Great food, wine, staff, view...wonderful experience. I went there twice a month while I was in Livermore for lunch.
The view of the Livermore Valley is fantastic from here. The lunch was a little pricey but very good, as was the service.
This is one of the moist under rated golf courses, I have ever played and I play in excess of 100 rounds/year with an Index of 16.1This is a 27 hole Public Course; the 3 nines are named, Merlot, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. We played Chardonnay & Merlot. Everything about the course is fabulous! We played in 40/50mph winds with gusts of up to 60mph, so not the best playing conditions. Still, there are many interesting holes; the holes are fair, not very tough or easy. The scenery is excellent. Have to think of the right club to use. No need to pull out Driver on every tee. Some blind shots so need to have played it more than once to really enjoy it. Friendly staff and apparently a great restaurant but we did not get to eat there because we had to rush home. If the course condition was better, this could be very high end course, but it is a public facility, so green fees need to be accessible by most. If maintained like a high end course, this would easily be in the top 100 in USA. The course is reasonably well maintained, but the potential if well groomed is huge!Be on the lookout for specials, Seniors, Coupons, Weekdays, etc., in which case probably one of the best deals in USA in terms of Quality/Cost.Will play there again!
My handicap is 15.....so this course can be tough. But its in excellent shape and fairly priced. You can also find coupons & specials.....
The grounds are equisite and the restaurant is really good. The people are nice. It is a really nice place to go for a special event.
Played here with our friends Jim and Gerry. This is the sister course to Poppy Hills. Good course and very reasonably priced.
Sat and admired the area as friends played a round of golf. The drinks were great and so was the food. My friends said the course was tuff but fair.
I really liked the course, I had never been there before. I am a lady with a 25 index and really felt the course was playable. The conditions were good and we had a fun time.
