Anyone that comes to santa ynez, has to stop here.Great whites and reds, very approachable wines at fantastic pricesLooking forward to our next visit
We were encouraged by a local friend to stop and taste the wines at Daniel Gehr Winery located in downtown Los Olivos (a quaint little stagecoach village with real history). There are a bunch of winery tasting rooms located in Los Olivos, which may explain the constant presence of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's department checking drivers, and they're not very friendly about it as well.We stopped at the cute little tasting room and sampled DG's wines. Great surprise, and immediately signed to become Wine Club members (since we live rather locally).Great reds - and we've belonged to a number of Winery clubs in the past - we've stuck with DG simply because we haven't found better.Check it out!
I loved this tasting room!! I bought at Imagine Wines and received a free tasting at Daniel Gehrs because of it. I'm so glad because with 55 tasting rooms I might have otherwise missed this gem! First of all, the staff was adorable, friendly, and so great to pass an hour with. Most importantly though I loved the wine! I prefer reds and love ports and I had a ton of options here! The full tasting was $10 but red white or port flights were also available for $5. I did the full and all were wonderful, but of course the best was last - the port! Perfect, perfect, perfect. The tawny port was fantastic and I was literally trying to get every last drop from my glass! Added to the great product and staff was a lovely patio and a fat house cat, Cleo. My favorite tasting of the weekend!
I'm sorry that paulreigerbos didn't enjoy the tastings at Daniel Gehrs and understand about the cat; however, let me say that although we enjoy Chenin Blancs, we didn't have any as all 6 of us we were in it for the Port... This was the ONLY place I can remember for Port tastings and they did not disappoint! If you're into that kind of sweet stuff, do not miss this place at the north end of town (and I found a shady parking spot by there, too). The Ports were awesome (so were their prices) as was the service. Yes, the cat is rotund, no argument there...could have stayed longer...
We decided to visit Los Olivos while staying in Santa Barbara. We took the wine tour with eight wines for ten. Maybe it was a slow day (Monday afternoon is probably not the peak time to go wine tasting; therefore the staff had extra time), because we got personal service and our every whim was taken care of.My husband is allergic to cats, and there is a rotund cat hanging about, so they invited us to hang out on the back patio as we tried our wines. It was gorgeously landscaped with cute tables- great photo opp!The service couldn't have been better.
During my tour in the south west I decided to visit Santa Ynez valley. I had read some good reviews about Gehrs, I had a white wine tasting and it was very disappointing. Seemed all whites had been standing on the counter all day and it was a pretty hot that day, Served at the wrong temperature. The chenin blanc was very flat and the riesling poor as well. The wines are overpriced. For half the money one can get quality Chenin blancs from South Africa or Riesling from the Alsace. After the remark made by the man at the counter he does not know South African Chenin blanc, I knew this is not a place to visit again.
Gehrs has been producing great wines for a long time. Nice tasting room in downtown Los Olivos and good staff. Fabulous ports!
If you are going to stop in Los Olivos you should try Daniel Gehrs wine tasting room. The atmosphere, service, and the wine was all great!! We really enjoyed our trip to the tasting room. The wine by Daniel Gehrs was one of he best we tried on the weekend we visited and the two Lady's that help us where top notch. We loved that we walked out and there was a man riding a horse down the street. We will go back for the wine and the great experience.
My sister and I stumbled across his tasting room in downtown Los Olivos almost by accident. We were heading over to Byron's tasting room (which we never made it to) when we noticed a small sign indicating port tastings could be had at the storefront to our left. We love port, so we stopped in, and we couldn't have been more right to do so!We did one of the standard tastings and also had one of the port tastings. The wines and the port were exceptional and very reasonably priced. The service was outstanding and we received much personal attention. This was a great stop on our day trip, and we look forward to returning!
Daniels gehrs is my favorite tasting room on main st. It has a cute courtyard with cozy tables where you can be outdoors and enjoy. They also have a tasting room inside but it gets pretty crowded. Don't leave without trying the fireside port!!! Its the best port I have ever tasted.
