We hadn't planned on driving around the Marin Headlands, but we had time and we're glad we did. It was in late morning just as the fog was lifting to a sunny winter day, so it wasn't too busy when we started but got busier as the day (a weekday!) went on. There is parking at different viewpoints, but it gets full so starting earlier is better. However, plan to take your time and soak in the beautiful scenery rather than rushing through the curvy hills. Great views of the Golden Gate Bridge abound--it's hard to keep your eyes on the road, so switch drivers at viewpoints to share the chance to ooh and aah!Stop by the visitor center (an old military chapel). It's not large, but the exhibits are interesting and eyecatching. It goes through the farming and military history of the area with many pictures which bring the information to life. We didn't walk out to the Pt. Bonita lighthouse, but we hope to do that next time,
Perfect place to view the GG Bridge, beaches, ocean and bay. Drive carefully as the winding roads are filled with bicyclists!
This my first trip here and it's awesome. There are countless things to do and see! This trip was all about photographing the Golden Gate! There are so many cool places to do it from! This side is mostly an afternoon and sunset photo, unless you want a silhouette type image, than sunrise would be fine. If your going early in am.....the gate letting you up to the highest vantage point is closed till after sunrise so prepare to park and walk up the road a bit. The lower access areas are always open.
I followed my friend's advice one day, rented a bicycle from a shop in Fisherman's Wharf and randomly started cycling towards the Golden Gate bridge. Needless to say, the photos I managed to click were amazing before and while on the windy bridge.Once you cross the bridge, there is a way to go all the way down to the bay - and a good spot to do some sea-lion watching, and basking int he sun with them! However, the truly surprising part of the trip came once I started cycling towards the headlands. There are vantage points every mile or so with spectacular views of the city, the bridge and the bay! The headlands have a similar quality as the Scottish countryside you saw in Skyfall. The weather was exceptionally great - tends to get windy but if it's sunny then it makes for a great ride. Moreover, there are the WW2 bunkers nestled in between which make for a good breathing spot to just sit, look out onto the ocean.Going downhill towards the lighthouse was a pleasure. By the time you reach there, the number of cars is less, so I felt safe in going full speed downhill.I ended the trip with biking to downtown Sausalito and cup of warm coffee at one of the many quaint restaurants and then took the ferry back to Fisherman's Wharf - again with a lot of opportunities to take good photos. The best thing about biking over the Headlands onto Sausalito, rather than walking (unless you have great stamina because this entire trip was a good 22 miles) or driving is that it allows you to experience the beauty of the trip first-hand. Cars are not allowed everywhere and it's sometimes hard to find parking. But you'll always find a bike-stand. Only advise would be to carry lots of water/gatorade.
Each time I visit San Fran, this place is on my must visit. When I picture the rough coast line of California, this is exactly what I thought it would be like! I could climb up to the top and watch the ships come into the bay while listening to the fog horn for hours! Beautiful pictures! I've seen deer & coyotes here! LOVE this place!
Probably the best place to come and get amazing views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate. Highly recommend coming in the morning on weekends to avoid the crowds. Lot's to see and do and the visitors center is useful for picking up a map of the area.
I have been to the stunning Marin Headlands on several occasions in the last 6 years and most recently in February 2015 when back visiting Northern California. The road up the headlands is windy and very picturesque with places to stop along the route to take in the vista's of San Francisco City and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Car parking (which is Free) can be an issue at busy times as spaces are limited and it is a popular tourist route. The famous fog can roll in very quickly and when we visited it went from clear to not being able in see the bridge in the space of 20 minutes... An impressive sight in itself but no good if you get there too late!
View of the Golden Gate, bay, and ocean is spectacular. Couldn't believe we've never been here before...crazy! Well worth the drive up....and down.
We were lucky we came here on a beautiful sunny day. There are many places to stop your car to take photos of the bridge. It wasn't full of tourists when we came so we didn't encounter the parking problems other people did. But make sure it's a clear day when you come here otherwise you see nothing. It's worthwhile stopping at all the different parking places to take photos of different views of the bridge. Definitely a top 3 attraction in San Francisco
