We took in the Redwood Creek Trail while here. This trail is actually down the road from Muir Woods and a lot less populated. My wife and I walked several miles of the trail and only met a couple people. One thing to note: you will not see many redwoods while on this trail but there are lots of beautiful views along the way.
Very interesting drive up to the walking trails. Trails are easily navigated even by those not too limber. Beautiful views of Marin County, the Bay Area and San Francisco. Refreshing and rejuvenating. Very glad we went.
I'm lucky enough to live on the mountain and have hiked it in sunshine, rain (and once in snow). Try heading out the Bolinas-Fairfax Road to a spot overlooking Stinson Beach (lots of car commercials filmed here), and plop yourself down with some snacks, a tasty beverage, and a pal. Hard to beat for beautiful, whether you're above a sea of clouds or just the blue Pacific. Magic.
This is an enjoyable scenic place to visit, however the weekend bicycle traffic through Mill Valley is very heavy and includes RUDE adult riders who completely ignore rules of the road, do not signal intentions, ride abreast and pull in front of traffic without looking! Very nervous drive! BEWARE the idiots!!
We went hiking at East Peak up to the fire lookout and also around the peak. The views are amazing. Even if you can't hike, the view is fabulous from the parking lot. It is a long curvy drive up there.
Clean air, nature, bridges, views above the clouds, quite areas, what's not to like. Hiked from Pantoll Ranger Station to East Peak
It's a rugged trek to the top but the vistas are absolutely outstanding. Make sure you visit on a clear day!!!
The views from the top are probably the best in the area. Regardless of the season, before you drive up, check to see that the weather is clear by doing an internet search for Mt Tamalpais webcam. Most recently I took up a couple of relatives with limited stamina. At the top East Peak parking lot there is an easy flat 1km "hike" that rings the base of the peak. You get all of the views from the top look-out without the climb. The climb is worth it, especially near sunset if there is a marine cloud layer - the setting sun lights up the cloud layer in iridescent fire. It's hard to predict the traffic. We went the day after Christmas, an absolutely beautiful day, after lunch and I was expecting a conga line of congestion up the mountain. Nadda. You can integrate this visit with a trip around the Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, or Lands End. Of all the things to cheap out on, don't short the parks system. Pay for your parking.
Highly recommend to visit - excellent view on SF bay. The park or at least some areas are open on weekend only - worth to check before you go.
We went to Mount Tamalpais and climbed to the very top to see the view. Unfortunately, it was so foggy that we couldn't see a thing. When we got back to the parking lot, we found we had gotten a parking ticket, $50! With the station closed, we didn't know who to pay the entrance fee to! Later, we saw that there are little envelopes near a post that you are supposed to put the money in and put the receipt on the windshield.
This is a sacred mountain and you feel it throughout. There is an immense number of trails for hiking and biking. If you make it to the top, Gorgeous views all around!
We took Johnson Ben trail from Muir wood to reach mount tam. Carry light food/sandwich/ fruits and water if you trekking to mount tam. Beautiful scenic view from the top of mt. Tam state park.
I absolutely love this hike! I have done it with my family, my boyfriend, and friends and I never get sick of it. My mom never wants to do the full hike, but she will go maybe 1.5 miles in and turn around and she still loves it. The full hike is about 6.5 miles and it normally takes us close to three hours to finish it. We enjoy the hike though and seem to stop for a bunch of pictures. About midway through the hike you end up at a campsite where there is a public restroom that you can use (no soap though). After the campsite, you turn around but go back a different route. One of my favorite things about this hike is the changing scenery. You start off going up a beautiful golden hill with a nice bath overlooking the ocean. Always have to stop and turn around and normally take some pictures here. Then it looks like you are going to walk into the forest from the Princess Bride. When you get inside, it is absolutely beautiful with moss and ferns growing everywhere. You will feel a need to stop and take more pictures. You go up a fairly steep walk (elevation gain of about 1,900 ft) for a couple of miles through the forest until you get to the campsite. There is a good train, but a lot of roots that you walk over and good shoes should be worn. After the campsite, you curve back down around going through another forest that looks different than the other. We always talk about how easy a mountain lion could get us because they can just pounce right down on us. We don't really see too many people when we are walking this part and you want to make sure that you don't get stuck here when it is dark. I know from experience that it is pretty scary. Then you come to some beautiful rolling hills overlooking the ocean. Again, you will want to bust out the camera. After the hills, you go back into the forest and weave down. The views and vegetation on this hike are amazing and it is a good workout. Love it! You end up right about the same spot that you started over by Stinson Beach. We often stop and say hello to the ocean before we head home. Now I want to go hiking!
In a 30 minute walk around the top of Mt Tam (Tamalpias) State Park, and view the 9 bay area counties. It is the best short hike in the entire bay area. And the drive up the mountain with Pacific Ocean and Bay views the best in the entire area.
Wow what a view!!!! Camera's are a must. If you don't likecurvy roads and or you can't do swerves and turns, take somemedication to make it bearable, fantastic view. I find out what the view really looks like from those million dollar + + homes.
