Was well worth the half hour I was there. A guide showed me the court room, the two little rooms the District Attorney had, the county treasurer's office. That had two big safes. Was told the biggest one was added after a robbery. Was told how they got it upstairs. Smal gift shop that sold mostly books of county history. Donations taken. If you have trouble with stairs (there is a lot of them), go around to the back.
The original Merced County Courthouse towers over 2 of the main streets that connect with it, M and 21st Street. It dates back 150 years and is a well preserved landmark worth visited. Since my family goes back almost 100 years in this community, it was pleasure dealing with the staff to preserve family photos. One of THE places to see while in Merced.
The courthouse museum is very pretty in the centre of the otherwise quite normal American town of Merced. Worth a quick stop on your way from San Francisco to Yosemite!
One could tell that this museum has been lovingly cared for by several citizens of Merced. Everything was carefully cared for and preserved as much as possible. The only thing I would want to point out is when deciding to visit the Courthouse Museum that the public be made aware that the first entrance to the museum is a rather hefty walk up the first set of stairs. Once inside the building there is another sets of stairs to climb, but fortunately, an elevator is available. Sit in the old courtroom andlet your imagination take over!
The Museum has great permanent exhibits, but also has rotating exhibits that are extremely well presented. Well worth a visit.
The courthouse is a favorite place of my 8-year-old son's. We can spend a fun afternoon exploring the displays, talking with the knowledgable volunteers, and then hit the county library, which is right next door.If you haven't visited the courthouse during the holidays, you're really missing out! There are decorated trees in every room - it's guaranteed to make you smile...
This museum is in the center of town. Built in the 19th century it still has it's charm. Staff is wonderful and helpful. Only open from Wednesdays to Sundays from one to four. It can take you an hour to walk and look at both floors. It's a nice little museum in the center of the center valley. If on your way to Yosemite from Merced. It's a nice little side visit. Sunday is a great time to hit it. No one there and you have it to yourself.
This tall, white, ornate courthouse is lit at night and is truly a beautiful site. Many community event are held on the lawn. There are some homeless persons at the park there, but not a problem.
This place keeps updating and doing intersting things throughout the year, They have a wonderful goup of dedicated volunteeers and well as staff who are supurb in helping locate info. Special holiday times they add rereshments too!
This historical courthouse is well preserved and is set in a nice green park. The courthouse will remind you of a wedding cake and is so pretty lit up at night. I believe in the 70s they still had some court proceedings here. Now there is a mixture of permanent displays and temporary exhibitions that are nicely curated. The upper floor has an impressive courtroom of the past intact. The gift shop, run by volunteers, has an impressive selection of books related to the area, watercolor notecards by local artists and many other specially chosen things that you might want to take home. A Mother/Daughter tea held here yearly is a very popular event that sells out quickly.
I visited this museum for the first time during the Christmas season. It was wonderful to see all the Christmas trees which were decorated so differently by organizations and schools throughout the town. What imaginations these groups have! I returned to see it once again, when the trees were removed, just to enjoy the history of the area. It's a great tour, the docents are friendly and full of great stories. It's a good place to take the family and best of all it doesn't cost you anything.
The Courthouse Museum is a lovely place, particularly during the Christmas season, when local groups are invited to decorate their own tree for display in the museum. In addition the various rooms shed light on Merced County's history. The gift shop has books, recipes and photographs of the city past and present. It's not a fabulous museum but it's worth an hour of your time if you are waiting for the bus to Yosemite. And the courthouse itself is a beautiful wedding cake of a building well worth a photograph all on its own.
The Courthouse Museum is really evocative of the various eras in Merced County's history and a fun place to learn about some of the scandals of yesteryear. The changing displays in the museum also hi-lite various aspects of the County and usually open with an evening special with speakers. I especially enjoyed the one about the history of water in the Valley and how it has impacted and changed every aspect of life here. Worth a look, for sure.
Perhaps you visited as a school child growing up in Merced but I think every adult should visit here at least once. Visits are free and that includes a guided tour. I don't recall anything too remarkable on my last visit but it does provide a decent history of Merced as well as the occasional new exhibit.
This museum changes it's high lights frequently. Therefore there is something new to see all the time. The docents are residents of the city and have great knowledge about the history. The staff is the best! Go and enjoy a step back into history.
