We did not go at the lowest tide but a couple of hours after low tide. We saw lots of crabs and small fish. There were interesting worms and seaweed. We will definitely go back at lowst tide.

The James Fitzgerald Marine Preserve is such a great place to visit. Go on a Saturday when Docents teach about the creatures you see- and the ones you would otherwise miss.Check the weather before you go. It could be warm or cold, and you will want to dress appropriately. You will also want to wear rain boots out on the tidepools. Mostly you will see sea snails and sea crabs. Take a closer look to find sea anemones, fishes, abalone, crabs large and small, sea lions, birds, star fish, a variety of Lottia, red, brown, green and white algae, and so much more. There are small sandy beaches just to the north and south of the tidepool area. A great place to sit and enjoy the ocean.Parking is limited. Park on or near Lake Street for the Northern beach, and for access to the flush toilet bathrooms.Park in the neighborhood near Cypress Ave. and Beach Way for stair access to the Southern beach. You can park at the later and take the Bluff trail to the former. A nice side strip would be to walk or drive down Beach Way and have a bite or drink at the Moss Beach Distillery, which has outdoor seating on the bluff.NEVER take any creatures home. Take a picture instead!
