As with most parks, the visit is about the attraction and not so much about the gift shop, or in this case the office. Yes, folks seem a little dis-spirited in the office. One expects enthusiasm and one might see it in these employees when it is time to clock out. The real thrill is being able to drive all over on windy two lane roads with very little traffic. There are trail heads everywhere. It's a great place to explore with plenty of wild life. Just be careful with all those cute little deer on the side of the road so as not to have to wear them home.

This office has several printed sheets that you can take with general info about the area. Your success at getting additional info from the staff will depend on their level of interest, current workload. Some of the staff have been very helpful. Other, not so much.

Recently moved to the Tahoe Natl Forest & stopped in to get info about regulations, safety, recreation, etc. Ranger had little to no information to offer about the forest. Just said "i don't know" & pointed to flyers in the office, annoyed. Was hoping for A LOT more insight & less attitude... Really disappointing to know that my tax dollars are going to a forest ranger burn-out

We drive through often and I am always impressed with the beauty of the mountains and the whispering pines. I am so glad we have the National Forests and we are preserving the beauty and grandeur.

we got to see the salmon run and just walking the trails was so wonderful being in nature.

Very limited supply of maps available, None for other forest areas.

I have been exploring California's great National forests for over 30 years and my favorite in N. CA is Tahoe. Most people are blazing up Lake Tahoe and miss this jewel called Grouse Lakes Basin in the Tahoe Nat'l Forest. It has it all. Close access to the Bar area, 100's of lakes, streams, rivers and tons of pristine forest trails and roads. There are may semi developed camping sites that are free on lakes and rivers. Plus with a camp fire permit and respect for the environment (trash, poop, being loud) you can camp almost anywhere there is a road access. If you want camping away from the crowds with a high Sierra experience, this is one of the best places I recommend.
