Hiking the Sespe River is great fun. Seems it is not well known as ee pretty much always have it to ourselves. Very dry these days as is most of California.
We got to the creek from the Piedra Blanca Trail head. We were there in August and the creek was bone dry. The river bed is filled with many trees and it is quite picturesque. The trail is well marked and well maintained. The Los Padres National Forest is pretty massive and this trail shows off the eastern side of the park well. Nice mountain views, ample vegetation. We saw a bobcat near the trail and that was pretty special. The trail is quite easy, but goes on for miles. I am sure in the spring with water it would be a fun place on a warm day to hike, cool off in the creek. You are supposed to get an day adventure pass for use of the trails, but there is no one around checking for these. Hike at your own risk though
Reaching the Sespe Creek was the best part of the hike. We had a little swim and enjoyed cooling down. I would advise to go really early in the morning because there is pretty much ZERO shade and it gets pretty hot after 11 in the summer. Wear a hat! Over all it was a beautiful hike with a great reward (the water).
What a great hike. It was a little off the beaten path and somewhat of a hard hike, but well worth it.
I drove to the Sespe Wilderness (Los Padres National Forest). I hiked to Mutah Flat. It was a gorgeous spring day. I love this area. It is so amazing that land like this is in southern California. I took a 3 mile hike to an amazing Chumash rock art site.
Hard to get too. a choice of hikes to be made for all ages. Just nature at it's best. Have good shoes and watch for snakes.
