We drove through here on two separate occasions and made quick pit stops. This forest is awesome! There seemed to some construction going on during the drive both times which congested traffic as well. Overall, the woods were beautiful and seemed pretty remote. I bet it would be great to camp, if you are into that sort of thing. We just appreciate walking in nature and taking it all in. The areas that we saw were clearly not "popular" because the beach is a ways off. Keep that in mind, but other than that, seems like some great wildlife watching and great views of Lake Tahoe.

We love the smaller campgrounds in the forest - Northwind, Strawberry, Gerle Creek. So picturesque and well maintained. There are no reservations at these smaller campgrounds, so finding a spot is pretty tricky. The Forest Service staff is very helpful. Ranger Patty Kushner, in particular, is competent and caring as she deals with campers' issues.

We enjoy going to Silver Lake area of Eldorado National Forest for hiking, picnics, and for fishing. We usually go by ourselves or with extended family members. We also like to go to Loon Lake. Sometimes its just fun to drive through the area and see the forest. In winter, after a snow storm, its quite nice to see the snow scenes.

Drove up to Loon Lake in the Eldorado Forest, just outside the Tahoe area. The lake is one of several large and quiet spots in the Union area. Camping was primitive with pit toilets and no hook-ups, but no matter...the lake was pristine and perfect for kayaking and fishing. The temperature was about 15-20 degrees cooler by day from the Sacramento Valley where we left the 100 degree weather behind. A beautiful setting and gave us the R & R that we sought and so-needed!

Wonderful drive from South Lake Tahoe to Eldorado National Forest passing Carson pass and other passes, stopping by number of lakes. Scenery is breathtaking, we stopped so many times before and after our hike near the Silver Lake. This was an outstanding day trip worth repeating once we are back!

On a recent business trip I took a side trip and drove from Placerville to South Lake Tahoe. It is wonderful. One of the best drives in the country. The scenery was great and the roads were not crowded.

What a fabulous drive we had coming in from SF the change of scenery was unimaginable. The best view was the top of the hill looking over the forest and Lake Tahoe. It was the most amazing view especially with the snow. Will have to stop and stay a few days next time ! Love the diversity of California ( coming in form England )

A place to let loose and get close to nature. Lots of eco-tourist activities along with a great place at South Lake Tahoe to enjoy restaurants and clubs.

High altitude camping at Loon Lake, canoeing on Wright's lake with kids, have a group there is plenty of room at Wench Creek. You can camp on a creek, lake, or deep in the forest. Easy to reach waterfalls, a wide range of hiking trails, and mountain peaks you can reach in an hour. Stopping at any one of the ranger stations is worth the effort as there are so many hidden treasures in this wide ranging Forest.

Because of the species and height, the trees are still green in summer. Compared with nearby areas, it looks much greener, and the forest, combined with the mountains, makes good views. For some part of it, the traffic and road condition are not hard. There are also several attractions close to it, which one can visit during the same trip.

The forest lies east of Placerville, from foothill area to the mountains and the Lake Tahoe Basin. Activities include camping, hiking, fishing, 4-wheeling, snow activities in winter, etc. Suggest contacting the main office in Placerville to determine if there are any restrictions in area and to obtain map.

We have spent lots of time in the El Dorado National Forest. Sometimes just for a day trip with a picnic, others with our RV staying at one of the many lakes in the area. The views from just about every camp site are gorgeous and serene. Relax at one of the two lakes that only allow non-motorized boats. Or you can ski/jet ski at the others. There's always wildlife around. Gotta be careful about locking up your food at night or you'll find a bear munching down your stuff. There's a store and gas station not too far away. A favorite area for our family to stay.
