Next time you're in the Shenandoah Valley, go down Bell Rd. (off of Shenandoah Valley Rd.) a mile or so to Story Winery, at the end of the pavement. It's a small lovely rustic winery, with wonderful views of the foothills, nice picnic facilities, and very friendly folks operating the winery and pouring the wines. The pours are generous, the wines tasty, and there's no tasting fee.

We hadn't been to Story for over 10 years. We stopped by to see how close the Sand fire had come to the property. It had come 100 yards or closer to their tasting room. While there we tried their reds! Wow! The Primitivo and Picnic Hill Zin were amazing. Pretty much everything we tried was wonderful. We joined their club immediately!

At the end of the road, overlooking the Consumnes River valley and the surrounding foothills, the location is spectacular. The tasting room is quaint and folksy, and the hosts are always personable and welcoming. When we visited 10 years ago, we were able to watch the first crush of the season, and one of the growers invited me up into the vineyard to taste grapes from two different varietals. This visit, after sampling the wines in the tasting room, one of the hosts took a group of us to do some futures barrel tasting down the hill in the winery. We got to taste and compare zinfandel from three different vineyards...what a great treat! The picnic area is beautiful under the shade of the majestic oak trees. Bring a lunch and enjoy nice wines in a perfect setting for relaxation.

The wines were enjoyable if unremarkable. They have a nice facility with an excellent view. I felt the wines were very drinkable, but nothing to make them stand out from the many good wines in the area.

Can't comment on the wines, since I don't drink. But our visit to Story was wonderful because of its location overlooking a beautiful valley, surrounded by 100-year old grape vines, twisted and gnarled into fantastic shapes. We were there before harvest, and the vines were laden with beautiful clusters of purple grapes. Friends took us just to see the setting, because the tasting room wasn't open. But the owners were on the premises and opened it up for us. Lovely and generous people who were delighted to share their history and let us taste some of their wines. Also have a fun gift shop. Beautiful place to buy a bottle, then have a picnic at one of their tables overlooking the wonderful view.

great views, good wine, and an entertaining host made our visit memorable. Pack a lunch and enjoy their views.

If you enjoy quality wine and quality service, you will understand why I rated Story as average. Basically, the view and setting is fantastic and beautiful. Therefore, I increased my rating to 3 stars. Enjoy the view and the art in the tasting room. Service and wine in the tasting room is below par so head further up the road to enjoy better service and wine.

Tasted all of the reds, mostly Zinfandels. None were as good as those at other wineries in the area and some had very unusual tastes, almost sweet (were not dessert wines). Have heard better things from other visitors, including some barrel tastings, so perhaps this was just a bad day. Service was brusque, not very friendly. Have heard better things from other visitors, so perhaps this was just a bad day. There is a great view overlooking a nearby valley.

this had the most affrodable wines, but they were also the most average. none of them were bad, but they were not as good as the other wines we tasted.

We had a very pleasant day tasting wine and enjoying the best views. Story is at the end of the road but we enjoyed it the most. Some of the other wine tasting locations seemed a little impersonal but not Story. All of the wines were very good but the raspberry sparkling wine was the best. Well worth the trip to the end of the road.

You will notice that there has not been a review on this winery 3 years. There is a reason, and it is terrible wine. In fact this place was scary. I am in the business and have never seen a woman in the tasting shed drink so much wine after just opening the doors. When we arrived around noon the woman behind the bar was chugging down a glass of wine. She said she was tasting the wine from the day before to make sure it was ok to pour that day. I understand that, but she was pouring herself a half glass to taste each wine. I asked her a question that anyone in the business should know and she said "I have to ask the guy outside and I will take him a glass of wine too. We could not wait to get out of there.

Charming staff, georgeous setting, delicious wines! We were delighted to see the old bunkhouse peppered with woodpecker holes!. The view was unbelievable. Owners Bruce and Jan were gracious hosts. Put this on your MUST visit list!

This area of wine country is known for it's big bold flavorful Zinfindals. Story winery has some of my favorites, because many have big berry flavors. My husband and I travel to Plymouth every February or March with friends, to do wine tasting in this area. What is nice about it, is that you do not have to pay to taste at many of the wineries, like you do in Napa. Check out Story winery website, [----]to see how gorgeous this place is, I regretfully didn't take any photos of this location.
