This winery was completely unknown to me and recommended by the proprietors of the Hanford House. The Reserve Zinfandel was particularly wonderful -- we bought a case -- but we also bought a Pinot Noir and a great summery Chardonnay. We plan to return during the Crush in October.

DTR and Easton make some of the soundest wines we've tried in the foothills. What do I mean by that? Well, you won't see too many vintages being poured from 2012 and 2013 here. They'll have Syrahs and Zins from 2007. And the reason for that is the wine maker creates wines that have staying power. These wines aren't ready to drink right away. They need to lay down and mature. When we first went in we were worried that this winery was just trying to dump old wine. That is until we tried then wines! They had a 2004 Syrah that tasted like it was a baby and needed MORE time to lay down. Great wines and worth the visit!

Upon recommendation from locals, we decided to make Terre Rouge a stop on our Big Crush weekend tour. The grounds are beautiful and there are plenty of picnic tables underneath the trees to sit and have lunch with a bottle of wine. The production of the wine can also be viewed as the vats, barrels, etc are within plain view. It was really interesting to see the winemaking process as it was actually happening. The tasting room is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and eager to help. We are completely new to wine so their kindness and patience was much appreciated. We ended up leaving with a bottle of Syrah which was fabulous and their Cabernet Sauvignon is a bargain at $15 a bottle. I would recommend you visit Terre Rouge when you are in the Amador County area because their hospitality can't be beat!

World class Cal-Itals are on the list here and Bill and Jane are among the best when it comes to crafting the top of the heap of award-winning wines in Amador!

We attended an event with food and live music. The wine served was top-notch (hence the 4 stars) but the event catered more to an older crowd. The food was exotic and not to our taste and the band played jazz. It seemed like a fun event, just not our pace.

Don't miss this tasting room. They make the wine magazines for a reason - they make great wine. What fun it was to taste here and to buy some memories for later consumption.

This is the best Rhone wine vineyard in the Sierra Nevada foothills. One of our favorites over the years. Come see why!

A little off the main drag. The smallish tasting room features two labels .1 Easton Wines (Zinfandel) and 2. Terre Rouge wines (rhone varietals). Bill and Jane Easton are the owners and are ofter on -site to explain their philosophy of farming and wine making. While I am not a personal fan of "sustainable viticulture" it's easy to understand the motivation to turn to "green" production practices. I found the wine to be interesting if not exciting. THe signature syrah "Ascent" sells for around $70/btl which is pricey for Sierra Foothills wines and frankly is more of marketing ploy than anything else. The grapes come from the Sentinel Oak vineyard on the estate and they produce a syrah from that block that sells for around $25.00 that is every bit as good as Ascent. Pleasant surrounding and pleasantpeopl. Definitely worth a stop on your Shenandoah valley wine tour.
