Lots of open areas for kids to enjoy, great displays. Friendly staff. Very nice store area attach, with lots of interesting items to see and/ or buy.
There are some great exhibits and a lot to be learned from the displays and exhibits here. I was impressed with the depth of background on the local history of aviation.
This museum was great for a family or just anyone. The paid museum staff were Not helpful and were inconsiderate. We found the volunteers cared more about the guest experience than the paid employees. Be aware the museum closes at a particular time but the paid staff start closing exhibits before the museum is closed. Asking nicely if they could turn on the light on an exhibit that was closed 10 minutes before the staff was down right rude and walked away. They say " We close exhibits early so you can walk out the door at 5 pm". So what they really are saying is don't stay until closing. I left with a sense of unfriendliness off staff.
I have lived in the bay area my whole life and only when I moved away did I see this museum for the first time with my 6 year old son. It was pretty cool, showing a number of different planes, helicopters and engines. You can also sit in the cockpit of a passenger plane, (you dont realize how tight a fit it is in there!). Overall great way to spend a few hours, especially if your kid/s love planes.
It was a windy day, so we were looking for some inside-activity. The museum is small but filled with many interesting things. Old planes, helicopters and weird flight machines from the first days of aviation. You get an impression how brave and innovating these pioneers were. Lots of them died young living their dreams.Outside is the "nose" of a Boeing free to enter. You can even take a seat in the pilot chair.Great to see the restoring shop with many volunteers listed. They all donate their time and knowledge for the museum. We didn't spend too much time inside, but it is definitely a great place for families with children. And the admission of $14 is absolutely reasonable. They have a large shop with everything around aviation.
If you are in the mid Peninsula with the family and have a few hours, this is a fun and educational way to pass the time. There are entry of interactive exhibits to keep the young ones engaged and learning and loads of interesting aircraft of historical significance along with their stories for the adults. Our children have liked it since they were four years old. They are now eight and still like it.
We've visited Hiller numerous times with our airplane-obsessed young kids (5 and 10). It wasn't until we wandered the museum with a guide that we really understood the amazing impact the Bay Area had on early aviation. Our guide was a retired USAF Brigadier General and his knowledge of this field was awe-inspiring. If you have a chance, sign up for a guided tour. It's worth it.The museum shop is perfect for quality birthday presents and Christmas presents for girls and boys. Kites, RC planes, models, Legos, Playmobil — they have some amazingly high-quality toys that I'm proud to give.
This is a small museum but we spent most of the day there. It's full of real planes as well as replicas. Docents are former pilots, air force guys, etc., and they are more than happy to tell you all about the various planes. You can get in some simulators, and in the cockpit of a 747. It is advertised as a great place for kids, but we adults all loved it. There are a few food trucks on certain days which was nice. We could go outside and eat and come back in. The gift shop is nice and not cheesy like some museum gift shops. Everyone was so pleasant and I'd definitely recommend going, with or without the little ones.
I was very pleased to find this jewel of a museum on aviation history. While many of the aircraft on display are replicas and models, there are many unique actual examples of aviation history. The B747 is a former BOAC and Flying Tigers aircraft and the cockpit is accessible with a tour guide answering questions as you sit at the controls. The Hiller helicopter history is very interesting and one of his choppers was manufactured from 1946 until 1974!!!!!
this is a small museum. It has some interesting old Army planes. Wish they had more simulators and fun stuff for kids. Although it is a kid friendly place, it might be a good idea for the museum to provide simple handouts in the form of coloring books highlighting the museum pieces. Overall a nice place to spend a couple of hours. They have a nice gift shop. They do have facilities to cater to small groups.
Having been to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, the Hiller is a much smaller museum but my kids liked the simulators a lot. I thought Hiller had a lot more unique and innovative aircraft displays.
Hiller has a wonderful collection of helicopters, planes, including some of the earliest gliders and planes as well as some cool simulation cockpits. There are countless photographs chronicling the history of aviation as well. Much of curation includes information about the technology of aviation. Hiller is located next to the San Carlos airport, making it a fun place to watch small planes take off and land. For New Year's Eve, Hiller does an awesome celebration for kids called Noon Year's Eve. They have face painting, reptiles, and other kid friendly displays/activities. At noon, they release balloons and serve sparkling grape juice. It is a blast for little ones.
The Hiller Aviation Museum is unique in that also on display are the very early experimental US Army single passenger machines such as the flying platform, the tiny single passenger helicopter, and a few others. There are early twin rotor Hiller helicopters, and flying machines that the average person never knew existed. The airplane collection is also unique...machines never seen close up in larger museums. There is a Wright Flyer copy, and others. There are also modern flying machines on display too. This is my third visit to this museum, and I'll probably visit it again in the future because it's a very interesting place..
I loved the guided tour it was very informative. I like the interactive aspects, such as the simulator, I like the walk in planes where you can walk in and sit in the pilots seat. All in all everyone should go to the museum
My wife and I stopped by while wanting for the helicopter ride down the street. This place has a lot of things to see and take your turn flying a 747.
