We've enjoyed music there both occasions we have been there. I enjoy going through the bumper stickers each time. They have hats, cast iron pots and pans, aprons, books, things for children, scarves, mugs, souvenirs, cards, beer, ice cream bars and lots more. Favorite stop for bikers.
This is the coolest and most eclectic place, off of Highway 1 on 84. It is best to go on weekends when they have different bands playing. You can checkout their website for listings and times. We have enjoyed some very good local bands here. This is our regular stopping off place when driving from SF to Santa Cruz or Monterey. We always have a great time and it is free entertainment..,or, the cost of a coffee, or coke and a candy bar!
Ok, so if your taking your Sunday drive down coastal Rt 1 south about 10 miles south of Half Moon Bay take a left onto Stage Coach Road, nice little windy back road that goes right to the Old General Store. This is going back in time with the Wild West, cowboys at the bar, next to 21st hog riders. Grab a cold beer and on a Sunday listen to the local musician play country, jazz or what ever make them happy.
We've stopped here many times over the years & recommended it to others as a fun, different sort of browsing/shopping experience. Lots of weird, interesting stuff ~ from books & cards to clothing & toys & soaps & oddities. Some food & drinks available too. This last time we visited, tho, the place seemed a bit disorganized & dirty. That & there were a lot of people hanging around inside & out who clearly had been drinking, were very loudly talking/yelling & using really foul language, the gal behind the counter included. That's their right, of course, but we weren't the only ones who left because of it. Management might think about cleaning up the place, if s/he wants more than just local partiers as customers.
This is a true country store, but with a twist. It has an interesting collection of books, postcards, gifts as well as the general store merchandise. There is also a bar and tables and usually a group is playing and singing. Fun to visit.
If your driving along the coast, this is a must stop for a quick rest and refreshment. Depending on day/time there may be some live music being performed. Is just a short distance off Hwy 1.
This store sells a little of everything you need and everything you don't, it's a lot of fun to browse around. Friendly service. Great place to pick up gifts. Definitely worth a stop.
This is one of my favorite places on the planet. For awhile, I worked in Menlo Park and lived in San Mateo. A couple of times a month, I'd take the long way home and stopped by the General Store. I've been there dozens and dozens of times since 1968.Here, you will mix with field hands, cyclists, bikers, Stanford professors, old hippies and young hippies. And, everyone having a good time. The bar serves a wide variey of beers and has excellent mix drinks. The music scene ranges from Irish Folk, to country, to country-rock, to blues and jazz and almost everything else. The Indigo Girls have played there and also Joan Baez who lives down the road (quite aways). There was a guy named Zeno who would sing Kansas City with any band. He was still singing when he approached a hundred years. Also down the road and pretty nearby is Neil Young's farm.If you go to the General Store, head east and stop by La Honda and Applejacks. This is the area where Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters lived and the subject Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and Hunter S Thompson Hell's Angels. If you stop by, say hello to the owner George and tell him George (a different George) sent you.And yes, there are a lot of very cool books.
