This was our favorite part of our Yosemite trip and we almost forgot about it! We had one day left and decided if Tioga Pass was closed (it was mid Nov. when we went) we would go to Taft Point. When we pulled into the parking lot (on the left going to Glacier Point) we were discouraged be the amount of cars there. Well, they must have taken the hike to Sentinel Dome because when we hiked to Taft Point only a dozen people were there. It is 1.2 miles to either Taft Point or Sentinel Dome and we chose Taft Point and were amazed at the views. The hike there isn't bad and you pass under moss covered evergreens and see a pristine forest. You emerge into a rocky landscape that overlooks Yosemite Valley. Most of the rocky overlooks do not have railings and is just as nature intended. There is one overlook that has a thin railing and that is it! We loved the majestic views of El Capitan and the valley below. It wasn't until this trip that my sister discovered she had a fear of "extreme heights" and wouldn't go to any of the overlooks except one. There is a section where you can literally squeeze between two rocks and come out on a protected overlook (it even had grass growing there). I convinced her to come out there, so hopefully someone who is afraid of heights can find this area and get to see the awesome views of the valley below.

It's just a mile away from the parking grounds and a relatively easy hike, but the views are spectacular!

This is an awesome hike. Only 2.5 miles round trip and a great view. at the end. Love it. And this time of year, it's nearly deserted.

We saw the Sequoia groves, meadows, Tunnel View, Glacier Point, the village and some other things along the way but Taft Point was the best. The short hike through the woods is FLAT and easy. Once you get there the landscape is unreal. I've never seen anything like it. It is eerily quiet and you can hear your voice echo around the cliffs if you speak slightly above a normal talking level. There is a USGS marker indicating that you are at a height of 7,500 ft. If you have a hard time putting how high that is into perspective, take a look over the 90 degree cliff and you can see Yosemite Village way way down below. The views are breath taking and you'll definitely get some great pictures here. Glacier Point is great, but is filled with lots of concrete paths, people taking pictures and talking loudly which makes makes it feel a little too touristy. Sitting on the edge of the cliff at Taft Point really makes you feel connected to nature as there is nothing there man made except for a small, but sturdy, metal pole which you can lean on to look over the edge. Although it is gorgeous, this is not a good place to bring little kids who like to run around, and you shouldn't visit at night. There are no railings at all and there are places where the cliffs jut in at various locations which you have to walk around, and they are sometimes obscured by bushes. This is a must see for anyone driving up the long road to Glacier point.

The trail in is a fun and fairly easy hike. The trail is very well maintained and full of very interesting things to see. The views are absolutely amazing when you get to the point. I'd highly recommend this hike. I'll definitely do it again in the spring.

It's easy to approach from the glacier point road. (2.2 miles/round trip)And, it was a truly awesome sight.

It's an easy hike throught the forest for just over a mile. Taft point is so worth it. It's just beautiful. The views are outstanding, and there is a small railing if you are nervous about getting to close to the edge. Try to do this on a clear day as the views are incredible. If it's windy or you have little people with you be very careful of the edge and hands held at all times. There was only a couple of other people there the day we went and I could have spent hours.

The magnificent view from Taft Point of Yosemite Valley is unparalleled. It's definitely worth the 30 minute hike because the view from here is better plus there are less people compared to Glacier Point. Since there are no railings, we were able to crawl to the cliff's edge and look down to the bottom. Also nearby, you'll see many fissures in the ground. Wonderful vista and views of Yosemite. Beautifully clear day with minimal wind. Took many pictures of ourselves and of other hikers there. Only 1.1 mile from parking lot and trail not very rugged for those less experienced

Nice hike to a breathtaking viewpoint straight down into the valley. If I had to choose between Taft Point and Sentinel Dome, I would do the Dome for the better view. We found the loop hike with both to be challenging, but we are also not used to the elevation.

We took the 1.1 mile walk. It was a bit tiring coming back up the trail as the altitude is over 7000 feet, but it was well worth it. Some boulders, rocks, and roots on the trail, so wear sturdy hiking boots and watch your step.

This combined with sentintal dome was a great few hours. We tom some great pics at the point. Bring some snacks and enjoy the view.

This is an amazing hike, only a couple of miles but not for the faint hearted as the drops are huge. What's so wonderful is that you are completely left to your own devices. No signs saying watch this or watch that, just make your own decisions. The views from the edge are out of this world, overlooking El Capitan and the Yosemite Valley. Do yourselves a favour and go for a hike.

This is an easy hike from the parking lot. We went on to Sentinel Dome after doing this hike, but we are glad we stopped here, too. There is a railing at the top of Taft Point, which we tightly gripped while getting our picture taken. It made me dizzy to look down, but the perspective from here is breathtaking. We think you should not choose between Taft Point and Sentinel Dome...you should definitely do both!
