Yea, there's better harbors, prettier boats and more action other places. My mother lived here and loved this place, the laidback unpretentious atmosphere. She spent some of her happiest times here.Thank you
We walked down from our hotel to experience this beautiful location. We highly recommend going but bundle up in the winter.
We were staying in a hotel right across the highway from here so got to visit a few times actually. There are places to eat, walking paths and plenty of wildlife in and out of the water. We were able to catch some great sunsets, watch the fog roll in, see a sea lion chase after some fish and also read about the tsunami that hit the harbor in 2011. All in all a great place to visit.
Beautiful Harbor! Wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Nice remodel. Nice shops and atmosphere. Surely one of the most beautiful harbors on the northern coast.
The best way to access and visit the Crescent City Harbor is along Anchor Way, a road running along the breakwater on the south side of the harbor, which is reached from Redwoods Hwy (US-101) south of downtown. Along Anchor Way, one will find ample free parking, several good restaurants (Porcini, Crescent City Crab Shack and Chart Room) and views of the colorful harbor on one side and Crescent Beach on the other. Distant views of the Battery Point Lighthouse can also be seen looking across the harbor and are often quite good around sunset. However, what brought us by every evening, even if only for a short time, was the wildlife viewing, especially the sea lions. About half way out on Anchor Way, where much of the parking is, on the harbor side, there are a number of small, floating piers that are frequented by sea lions which are very entertaining to watch as some of these social animals scratch, squabble and bark while the others try to get some rest on the crowded piers. Towards the end of Anchor Way there are some larger floating piers that are frequented by dozens of harbor seals, but they are not nearly as entertaining, and sometimes whales can be seen in the open ocean beyond.
as the title says, you can be disappointed elsewhere and if you drive 20 miles north there is a Harbor with some actual activities and some ascetic value , not to mention you will save 25 cents per gallon on gas. This Harbor has such potential yet no vision . there could be multiple attractions or even a single draw for families to visit yet none exists. you will see boats moored ready to sink and dock over run with ......anyway avoid the disappointment
I liked how you can walk around and see all of the boats. But there wasn't anything special. It is brand new after the Tsunami tore it down. Great spot to take pictures thought!
A harbor is not a place I would normally go to see wildlife but there are so many animals to see at the Crescent City one! The Harbor put up a bunch of floating docks where you can see seals and sea lions sunning themselves and playing in the water. There is also a cute restaurant at the Harbor where you can have a nice seafood lunch and watch all the animals playing. The harbor is really clean and looks pretty new. It is a definite stop if you are in Crescent City.
I visited the harbor in September with my family; it was amazing! The sites are incredible with the offshore sea stacks, lighthouses and the ocean but the wildlife was even better! Sea lions all around serenading everyone who will listen and the occasional seal popping up to say hello. And I saw whales! Everyday! The remodeled harbor was amazing to walk around and see how it has become tsunami proof and look at all the different boats that were docked. Make sure you look for fun little designs around like their themed bike racks and fun statues. Afterwards, about a 30 second walk to the beach and I was surfing! The beach is a perfect hang out. Great weather the whole time! Didn't get to try the restaurants right there but the locals were telling me they were great. This place is definitely worth it to stop and hang out for a few days! The redwoods are surrounding the whole area, seriously so much to do and see at this harbor! If you get a chance, catch the harbor master; wealth of knowledge and just a cool guy to talk to.
We live not too far from Crescent City, and frequently take the opportunity to visit this incredible restaurant. The finest fish and chips dinner available anywhere on the California-Oregon Border Coast. Superb service and a unique harbor setting. Watch the sea lions and crab boats come and go as you enjoy a great meal.
Since the last tsunami we got a brand new harbor and it's clean and fun. There are lots of sidewalks to walk or skate on. The crabbers all dock their boats there and you can look at the days catch. There are sealions basking around everywhere and it's a fun place to go and see. Especially since Crescent City is most famous for it's CRAB!
We love this area, go there often just to hang out, watch the marine traffic, the gulls and the sea lions. The views of the lighthouse are world famous.
We are traveling thru the area and unfortunately it is raining. Unfortunate because, this is one of the most beautiful places along the California coast for walking. Still, the ocean and coast and redwoods and sea lions and lighthouse are amazing to see even with the rain. I think the people who live and work here are really lucky to be surrounded by such an extraordinary environment We had planned on walking on some trails thru the beautiful Redwood National Park but we will have to come back to do that. There are some great choices for eating and staying overnight. There is a small museum which was closed today and a small Aquarium, if you pass thru during rainy weather. However, the elk herd we passed on 101, the sea lions in the harbor and the spectacular redwood trees were all on display today.
The reconstruction of the harbor is nearly finished and it looks fabulous! New piers, jetty wall, restrooms and working on the bike paths.
We stayed two nights in Crescent City, very scenic little town. Easy to get around and lots to see in the area. We stayed at the Super 8, not a high end motel but okay. We did get to see the seals as well as some young men netting crabs. There is a group of cats that live near the monument to those lost at sea, they looked well taken care of.
