This museum has a lot of information and exhibits on local life in the area over the years in the Del Norte area. Tribes of the area, the tsunami of '64 and the logging business are all highlights of the museum. They have exhibits of everyday life from the obscure to the mundane. We really enjoyed browsing through the exhibits and learning more about the development of the Del Norte area.
In an old building, school children go here to see the history of Del Norte and Crescent City. There are lots of interesting things especially about redwood logging. Very small, takes only about 1 hour. Nice stop if you are here in CC.
They have a fresnel lens inside the museum, what a treat to see up close. Very nice staff and great displays. We will go back
We took a driving vacation through northern California, Oregon and Washington, stopping at history museums in each town. This one was definitely the best of the bunch. It's stuffed with fascinating items, so many that we wondered how they were able to persuade so many people to donate so many of their treasures. You'll have glimpses of every walk of life -- commercial, medical, residential, lumber and fishing industries, childhood, and on and on. Depending on your interests and your stamina, you could spend 5 minutes or 5 hours here. Don't miss it if you're in the area and care about history.
We popped into this museum mostly as a respite from the rain. What an unexpected delight! We ended spending more than an hour here and could have stayed longer. The museum has many interesting artifacts including a light house crystal (almost two stories high), indian clothing/items/pictures, jail cells (this was the former sheriff lock-up, lumber industry tools and pictures and exhibits about Crescent City tsunami damage, both recently and in past years. Truly fascinating stuff. Far and away worth the small donation for entrance.
This museum showcases Native American artifacts as well as items from the town, the wildlife, early settlers, fishing industry, logging industry, and local shipwrecks and former lights from local lighthouses. It is "chock full" of amazing sights and is well worth the time to stop in and get some local flavor.
This place is worth a visit. I love history and try to visit museums in towns when I can. For a $3 "donation" you get a chance to see Crescent City's rich history. This is a 2 story (or maybe 2.5 story) building with exhibits of just about anything you can imagine. Interior of an early 1900's home, dentist office, ice cream parlor, jail cell. There was a full size fully restored carriage from early 1900's. lots of interesting stuff...I could go on and on. I probably spent an hour and a half just wandering around.
Well worth the visit ... especially to see the 5th order Fresnel lense from the St. George Reef Lighthouse "up close and personal".
This museum takes hours to go through properly. The size and scope of the collection is AMAZING! I especially loved all the items from residents that show the daily lives from ye3ars ago. Worth the stop!
Great museum. Covers all aspects of Americana and has many exhibits about the local area. Well laid out as you pass from room to room. Well done.
As a former review said, "When you walk in the front door, you go un-oh." But once you get past the cluttered attic feeling, you realize things are really laid out in an orderly manner and well labeled. They just have a lot of stuff! Each room leads to another that is as interesting, if not more, than the one you just left. For us, seeing the Fresnell lens from the St George lighthouse was the highlight of the tour. The volunteers are very well versed and could answer all the questions we asked (sorry, we really asked a lot).
Another most interesting stop , if you are up that way stop in here at the Museum, was very interesting & learned much about this area! :-)
Large exhibits of local native americana. The point st George Reef Lighthouse fresnel lens also resides here. Great place for research as well. Very helpful volunteer staff and a nice gift shop too.
Well put together and filled with interesting artifacts and information. Plan on spending more time than you think. Three dollars is a steal for this great place.
I highly reccomend that you go see it and be sure and see the Indian exhibit
