The art of American Hung Liu will engage you long after you have seen her HER huge canvases full of anguish and beauty. And curator/husband points out that the sculpture (permanent) at the entrance is by Chinese contemporary. It imitates the tai stone found throughout classical gardens in Suzhou --outside of ShanghaiUnique show. Find it where you can--even on line. Art of Hung Liu is not to be missedCurator Jeff Kelley is a rich source of info on Chinese contemporary art IN China and internationally. Follow him too
I was there for two hours and never made it off the main floor. The Native American and Art of the West gallery was eclectic, but each piece was superb. Check out the amazing rattlesnake baskets. I had no idea what a variety of glass-making techniques there were and so really enjoyed the contemporary glass exhibit. I wandered into the special exhibit of art by Hung Liu and was quite moved. It was a wonderful installation of pieces that thoughtfully interpreted China's recent history. The store was also very good. Great museum!
We stopped here for a visit before the Thursday evening street market and really needed more time to see and appreciate the whole place. The current special exhibit, I felt, had lots of emotional impact. A quick browse around some of the other exhibits proved that this art gallery has some wonderful, interesting, thought provoking works. Plan to spend a few hours, at least. It is worth your time. Thursday evening is free along with the parking. Look for the building with the shiny, silver sculpture out front and don't forget the outdoor sculpture exhibit.
Some very fun, quirky displays. Go on Thursday evenings when it's free, and there are also free tours then.
if you have not been to the PS art museum, you should treat yourself. I think that on Thursdays admission is waived - at least on the Thursday that we went it was. Great little museum in central PS.
I was very impressed with this museum and our docent, Robert Procter, was very informational. There is a large variety of works at this museum which makes it very interesting. The inner part is open to a skylight which makes it very light and airy. There is such a diversity in the art works, which keeps your interest pique'd as you move from floor to floor. The outdoor displays are beautiful! And of course the gift shot is a "must visit"!
We had been a MEMBER of the Palm Springs Art Museum for many years. We just received another renewal notice for the Art Museum. No Thanks. Like the first one , it has gone into the garbage can. They had promised local groups access to their theatre, and then unceremoniously withoutwarning, turned their backs on them, leaving them out in the cold with VERY SHORT NOTICE.VERY BAD FORM. Shame on you. Please read the following article and you will understand why......Palm Springs Art Museum Lays off Long Time Employee, Tells Groups to Find Other Theaters and Changes Marketinglink: ( click below )coachellavalleynews.com/…
I loved the building, a gorgeous example of mid-century modern architecture and the permanent collection- some beautiful paintings of the desert.
We always visit this place when in PS...All kinds of art including painting, sculpture and some fun stuff too.
We have a weekend house here but ever once went to this museum because the weather is always so fabulous. Well, last Sunday it was pouring so we thought we'd do some indoor activities and visit the museum. We really regretted that this was our fist visit. The museum is absolutely fabulous, big enough for many hours of exploring and small enough so everything can be explored. The Western and Native American art is very interesting in that it gives you a feeling of what life was like in the good old days. This is definitely a must visit if you visit Palm Springs and if you live here you have no excuse not to go. We will definitely be back soon!
A fabulous new building housing a great art collection. Quite strong in sculpture. Really an amazing collection for such a small city.We were lucky enough to see the Ai Weiwei bronze zodiac heads.
An excellent collection of Western & Native American art. The special exhibitions have always been impressive. A "must see" for visitors to Palm Springs.
For the size of Palm Springs this museum is world class! If you love art and art museum don't miss it! The permanent collection is wonderful but their special exhibits are ALWAYS amazing!!
The Art Museum in Palm Springs is intimately scaled with a broad representation of North American and european art and sculpture. We were pleasantly surprised to see Gavin Turk, Anthony Gormley and Duane Hanson represented in the gallery.
Nice mix of artworks from ancient pottery to modern art. It's a nice way to spend a late afternoon or evening.
