We were vacationing along the Pacific Coast and just happened to drive past this winery by accident. OK...I'll be honest, we were looking for a bathroom lol. Anyway, I'm glad that we stopped. As it turned out, they were very nice and informative. And the wine, the wine was very nice on the palate. If your in the neighborhood, I would definitely recommend making a visit here.
A nice stop along the way to Half Moon Bay. It may be 10am but it's 5pm somewhere, right? Nice tasting of 10+ wines. Very accommodating. Sent 3 bottles home + some very nice marble tile coasters.
If you're driving over to Half Moon Bay from the airport this is right on the way. The tasting room is large enough for groups and the tasting is $10 keep the glass. I'd recommend the port tasting which is an extra $2 served in a chocolate cup. The grounds are very pretty with a picnic table area out back. The tasting room has a gift shop that also sells gourmet & picnic snacks. There is a bathroom facility.
I was in search of wineries on our drive down Hwy 1, but seeing as it was Monday, not many things were open. I found this on Yelp and we decided to give it a try. It's a cute little building off the road over the mountain. Very unlike the big estates up in Napa and Sonoma. We didn't expect there to be anyone else, but there were a couple of other small groups inside (probably b/c it was a Monday and this was the only place open in the area). But it didn't feel crowded and the person doing the tasting was able to pay attention to each group. I think you get about 8-10 tastes and you get to keep the glass. The tasting goes in the usual order, and you get a port or dessert wine as well. They sell some food inside and there is a picnic area outside.
They do have a good port and for me that's about it. I just don't care for the taste of their wines. The picnic area has tables and bocce ball. It's a nice place to visit.
This is a small quaint tasting room in Half Moon Bay. It's very CA country-style, like the family wineries you can find in the backwoods of Sonoma. The outside area with bocci ball is pretty nice, I could definitely relax out there for a bit. Staff is nice, wines are OK. A good place for a quick visit.
This was a nice stopping point along the way. The atmosphere was great, I liked most the wines, not the dry ones and the people were really nice and helpful. Port wine was the best!
I have buying wine at the bottle and cork day for three years. I have found that if you storeaway the wine it gets better. I usually store it away for at least six months. Sometimes the wine is pretty good or at least drinkable. I have had a couple disappointing batches over theses three years. For 5 bucks a bottle you roll the dice and hope for the best!
If you're looking for a vineyard experience, this is not for you. They do not grow grapes or make the wine on the premises; it is a tasting room. We went in for a tasting, which was relatively inexpensive, and got to try all of the wines that they make, with the exception of a port. The man and woman who were there were passionate and excited when talking about the wine. They answered all of our questions ranging from where they get their grapes to the history of Half Moon Bay. They also sell food products there which are all either made by La Nebbia or locally sourced. They have their mustard and one of their oils out to try, both of which were excellent. You can either do a quick tasting or sit outside and spend more time there. I would highly recommend stopping in for a tasting on your way to Half Moon Bay.
I stayed in Half Moon Bay for 3 nights. When arriving, I noted the La Nebbia Winery on Rt. 92, ja short distance before Rt. 1. I planned time to stop and tast before heading back to the airport. A full tasting (10-11 wines) is $10. And I did find a couple of selections that I thought were quite good.Don't expect grapes outside. This winery appears top source its grapes from the various nearby wine growing areas. Regardless, i would grade this small winery certainly much above average for taste and average for value.Tasting fee was waived when I purchased some wine to return home. The tasting room manager was very friendly and attentive.Overall, a good experience.
Let me start off by saying that I did not just decide to review this Winery off a whim. In fact I thought about this experience for 3 whole days and decided to share. In fact my company is an advertising partner with the Wine Passport Days they are part of which even made me more disappointed.Friends and myself decided that we would make our last stop on the passport day at this location. For those of you not familiar with what I am referring to, the Santa Cruz Mtn Wine Growers association has passport days when you can buy for $45 a booklet and visit a slew of great wineries during their tasting hours and enjoy a tasting on the house. We drove through a thicket of traffic all the way from Santa Cruz and arrived at 510PM, their hours were 10am-5pm. I expected for the location to be closed and really just hoped it might understand due to being on HWY 92 and always being congested with traffic, but we knew the possibilities. We arrived and there were a ton of people around in the bocci area, people out front at a distance, and people still being poured wine from a glance right before we were to walk in. Instead an employee pushed past us, walked behind us and without looking at us told the air and the trees "no more new pourings would be accepted", they then walked past us again and as I looked inside was greeted by dirty looks from those behind the counter still pouring as i stood 3-4 feet from the door. Did I expect them to be closed, yes, did I expect to be told that yes. Did I expect them to refuse to address me face to face, and instead treat me not like a human and physically ignore me to make some point to nobody else around, NO!!! Wow, total lack of caring for patrons.I would have been 100% OK with somebody saying "so sorry we are closed, can I offer alternative times" but to be breezed by and not actually even greeted to have some employee just shout to an empty lot instead of just telling me to my face and then receive additional poor treatment? OK, that is when I share what your selling! So for those interested in visiting Half Moon Bay and to my fellow passport users and SC Mtn Wine fans, I suggest fervently to not visit a place where they treat guests with such disregard for common courtesy, manners, and guest service. La Nebbia, you earned yourself a negative experience advocate!
The wine is not going to win any gold metals but you know they are nice people and they make pretty decent wine. For the best bet check out their website and come during a cork and bottle event. This is when you can get a bottle of decent to good wine for $5 bucks, less if you bring your own glass. The place has decent wine for reasonable prices so check it out,
La Nebbia is extremely small and kind of rustic--not really a winery to visit if you are looking for an experience like those up in wine country. They don't grow any grapes here, the process is limited to the bottling so there isn't much to see. They have a small shack they use for tastings. The outdoor gardens are ok, nothing special. All in all, this place is not really worth a visit--unless you are going to the glass blowing class on property.
Our son mentioned this place when he heard that we were staying in Half Moon Bay for 2 nights. It's old fashioned and has pleasant bocce courts and tables in the back, to take your wine out and relax. La Nebbia buys its grapes and makes the wine on site, just no vineyards to see. Tasting was $8 pp, and included all their selections and a nice wine glass to keep. You could buy a glass of wine and take it outdoors, or even take your tasting outside to relax between wines being poured. The paintings on the walls are originals done by Sharon Scott, who was pouring our tastings that day. They have a wine cooler with wines, cheese and some deli selections to pick up if you need a nosh. Lots of specialty food items for sale, too. Sharon gave us lots of advice on local restaurants and attractions, being a local who enjoys chatting up the customers!
We visit a lot of wineries in CA, we know our wines, and we know even more about the winery experience. We have both been in the business. We will skip the long narrative.... Provided below is our rating of the winery:0 to 10 stars Wine:Sauv. Blanc - 2 starsChardonnay - 2 starsRose - 1 starSparkling wine - 1 starSangiovese - 0 stars (2005 sangio - really?? It's very obvious why they still have this wine) Syrah - 1 starCab - 0 starsOrange muscat - 3 starsBlack muscat - 3 starsCost/value of wine vs quality: 1 Star -considering the quality of most of their wines are very low, the price to quality is extremely high. We found some of the wines to be un-drinkable and poured them out - something we RARELY do. Tasting room staff: 3 Stars - not very friendly, not very knowledgable, nothing special here - pour the wine and hope you buy. No tasting credit when you purchase a bottle of wine. This is not industry norm and is expensive when you consider we dumped most of the wine. The pours are generous but this is because you are purchasing a "flight" instead of tasting - I'm sure that is their reason for not providing a credit when buying a bottle...Atmosphere: 5 stars - convenient location with nice outdoor picnic tables and bocce ball. The best aspect about this place is the grounds - tells you something...Summary: Not worth the stop, unless it's to have lunch and play bocci - but bring your own wine!!
