The building is unassuming, but the museum has a lot to offer. I saw my first Van Gogh there! There is a small fee to. Enter, but it is so worth it. Wheelchair friendly.
It was a pleasant surprise to find European art depicting Epic Biblical stories. Truly beautiful, expressive art work some of which was painted for those who couldn't read. So, the stories were told through paintings. It's a small museum, so it's just enough to absorb what's there without being overwhelmed. The Italian paintings from Glasgow were the high light.
This is a lovely small gallery well worth the visit. They had a wonderful exhibition on when I visited called Botticelli, Titan and beyond which is on until May and well worth seeing. The permanent collection is also good.
There is a terrific exhibit showing at the museum entitled "Botticelli, Titian and Beyond: Masterpieces of Italian Painting from Glasgow Museums" .. and it is so worth seeing! It covers some 500 years of truly spectacular Italian art...much of it with religious themes...It is beautiful, enriching, and awe-inspiring!
Located right on State street, it's a nice break from shopping and the crowds. Small, but nice art and sculpture collections.
Amazing and well laid out exhibition. Great to see such good art away from its originating museum ie Glasgow.
This is a small, but very nice art museum with nice modern architecture and a lot of notable pieces on display. The last time I was there, they had a couple of famous Chagall works on display as well as a couple of early Van Gogh works.
We went to the Museum of Art on a rainy Saturday. Because they were installing new exhibits, much of it was closed to the public. However, because of this, it was free admission. We saw some wonderful paintings and sculptures. For a town the size of Santa Barbara, this is quite a nice museum with some wonderful exhibits. It is two stories, and I would expect to spend between one and two hours there. Worth the visit...especially since it's right on State Street so you can include it on your walk up State.
My gf and I hit the museum on a Saturday. It was free admission day! Although it was gearing up for an exhibit changeover, it still offered a lot of interesting, and amazing art pieces. Well worth taking a few hours to wander through!
For its rather small size, the museum has a beautiful collection of paintings and sculptures. It is centrally located in downtown Santa Barbara and there is no admission charge.
You can visit the entire museum in under 2 hours. Their Asian artifacts are very special and well worth a visit. When we were there they had some paintings from the Armond Hammer collection of Impressionist art. Very beautiful.
The art museum is on the main shopping street of Santa Barbara, and it is a cool retreat from that hustle and bustle. It features classical sculpture and a range of paintings. I especially like the central gallery exhibit, which focuses on experiencing art from the perspective of understanding human form. The main exhibit gallery was closed when we were there, and this made for a shorter visit, but no admission was charged while the main exhibit space was in transition.
A variety of exhibits and some stunning artwork are the attractions. An afternoon is plenty of time to cover the whole museum. Frequent special exhibits make repeat visits a pleasure. The nearby area is also charming. Small cafe and separate gift shop are both enhancements to the experience.
We went to the museum to fill some time on a vacation during the rain soaked December of 2014. The museum turned out to be a nice diversion. It offers a very eclectic array of art and at the time we were there the temporary exhibit of animal photography was very unique and interesting. There is a nice collection of well-known artists in the back of the museum and the rest is worth taking a look, even if its less well known pieces.
When we visited the SB Museum of Art, some of the galleries were under renovation so we were only able to see the Asian collection and a special exhibit integrating some of the museum's collection and works from the Armand Hammer collection. For that reason there was no admission. The galleries are lovely spaces and the Asian collection has some very unusual and beautiful objects. The temporary exhibit was small but had stunning works including some by Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Pisarro, Degas, Rodin and an especially vibrant Sisley. There was a small group of Daumier drawings that were quite interesting as well. I suspect this museum is a gem when you can see more of its own collection.
