This yacht is located at Jack London Square (a jewel of Oakland). The yacht was President F.D. Roosevelt's during his presidency. It has been completely refurbished and is open for tours and can be booked for bay trips. We have gone on it for special occasions and it is an historical and fun thing to do. The visitor's center has information about the yacht and its colorful past.
We visited the USS Potomac with our homeowners group awhile back and absolutely enjoyed our cruise on SF Bay while absorbing history first hand - such a wonderful experience + every time we are at Jack London Square, we can stop by & see it again & again :)
The USS Potomac is a fun boat to walk around and hear tales of FDR days aboard. And taking a local cruise on the bay or to Sacto is even better.
If you liked the Churchill Museum and War Rooms in London, you'll want to visit this historic vessel, the former Presidential Yacht of FDR. It is well curated and presented by the dedicated volunteer docents. While in Jack London Square don't pass up a chance to have lunch or dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants that everyone is talking about. Visit Oakland's new offices are located steps away as welll; a great place to stop for some insider tips on what else is going on there on "the sunnyside of San Francisco Bay". The yacht is also available, with full catering, for special event charters.
One can do nothing but learn and appreciate the views from here as well ..close by also is the lightship Relief and that is also a good learning spot took my grand son when only three here years ago (8 Now) time to take him back so he can learn more and keep history fun...both can be visited in one easy day..i love the photo spot as well and people watching too..
If you are interested in presidential history this is a great visit. Even the children will enjoy it. See a video and then tour the ship. I would like to go back some day and take a cruse.
Take this opportunity to see what the inside of a presidential yacht looks like. The ship is in good shape and has a great story to tell. Fun for the whole family.
We went out on the USS Potomac summer of 2013 to see the America's Cup races. Docents were on board to show us the boat and take us on the tour. It was a very nice event with catered food and wine and other beverages. The America's Cup Race was thrilling to see from the USS Potomac. The USS Potomac was the floating White House of American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Prior to going out on the boat we visited the vistor center and watched some interesting videos. We parked in a nearby parking garage for the time we were on the boat.
By exterior appearances, it doesn't appear worth the trip. However, don't let the looks deceive you. The Museum staff -- mostly retired military men -- give a great tour and can answer almost every question. It's always small groups with a tour guide and I had a one on one tour and really enjoyed it. The ship has a lot of history --- from being FDR's presidential yacht to once being owned by Elvis Presley. I was disappointed that I couldn't get out one of the cruises. Book ahead for them if you can!If you take the ferry to San Francisco, it's right by the Oakland ferry dock in Jack London Square so really convenient too.
The Folks that volunteer their time and energy to keep telling the story that is USS POTOMAC are "Top Shelf"! When so many groups from all walks of life can come together with one goal in mind; TODAY IS ALL ABOUT THE KIDS. It was one of the best experiences of a lifetime! So many people to mention/thank.... The Oakland Police Dept Boat's for escorting our FLEET of 10 Classic Yachts, dating back to the 1920's. The San Francisco Fire Dept, Fire boat "PHOENIX" with Her water cannons at full blast, the Children and Family's LOVED!! Again the TEAM from the USS POTOMAC ORG, all the CYA Boat owner's and Family members. All the people and organizations that donated supplys and the fund's to make this event happen. A Very special Thank You to this year's Classic Yacht Association's Commodore and Bride, Mr. and Mrs. John Di Lillo, they put in so many hours in the last 9 months for what turned out to be an epic event.
To be able to tour a Presidential Yacht is very cool. Do check the hours of operation before you go, as they are not always open. I think it is seasonal.
We were staying at The Waterfront Hotel and right next door in the harbor was this historic yacht that President Franklin Roosevelt made famous. We did not go on, but it was a real delight just to see it moored there.
Lovingly restored and sporting enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteer docents and a FASCINATING history, be sure to get a least a dockside of this vessel while you are at Jack London Square!
Restored presidential yacht of FDR, an awesome boat and great ride. We went over to Angel Island and back, great water views of Oakland and San Francisco, and more cozy that a big ferry.
Truth be told, I'm a long-time docent on this ship (15 years), so I'm a bit biased. We've hosted people from all over the US and, in fact, have had many visitors from almost every country in the world, and everyone gets something out of it.
