For a local public course Shoreline has a reasonably interesting layout, especially on the back nine. The greens are in good shape and they have a driving range (although only with mats). Nice practice greens also. The geese and coots certainly know their way around the course.
Shoreline Golf LInks at Mountain View is a pleasant place to play golf. The golf shore is "sandwiched" between a sailing park and Shoreline Amphitheatre. As such you get a view of both at times as you play the course; there is a number of water hazards. Wind off the bay can sometimes make golf here "tricky" to play. The Pro Shop and cafe are nice. Parking is free and by the pro shop area.
There are not many courses that boast the combination of scenery and the 'links style' course layout. The course is challenging, but not excessively so - and when the wind is down, it's not so challenging. It's not particularly long, but demands that you manage the course to score well. Greens are variable - I've played them in great shape, and at times have wondered if the staff was on vacation this week...
a really scenic and relativley easy golf course but with too many organic hazards - as in geese droppings. Also the marshalls here are a bit brusque and rude- as most golf marshalls usually are. Still, this is a pretty good choice among public golf courses in the bay area.
Nice lunch options with a great view of the golf course and wildlife. Dependable great light selections, salad bar and sandwiches.
This is the Mountain View municipal course and I have played there regularly for a few years - 3 to 5 times a week. The reasons are: it is conveniently located a few minutes up the freeway from my home, it is a moderately challenging course for a 14 handicap golfer, the layout is quite nice, the ambiance along San Francisco Bay is quite nice, and for $100 a month seniors have unlimited golf Monday thru Friday and a few restrictions on week end play. The city turned course management over to an independent firm a year or so ago and improvements in course maintenance have improved, but for old time regulars some benefits with tee time reservations have become more difficult. There are three negatives to the course. The big one is the birds - geese are there all year, they no longer know how to migrate - and they leave a lot of crap that can be annoying. But, not nearly as annoying as the coots that return from the mountains for the winter. They are numerous, do a lot of damage and leave reminders of their presence all over the place. The management has made some inroads in improving the situation, but short of assassination, which is prohibited since the course is considered a bird sanctuary by Mountain View, they are limited in what they can do. The second negative is the late afternoon wind, so play earlier in the day if possible - these winds can be fierce, as much as 3 - 4 clubs worth. The third is common of municipal courses - slow play unless you can play early in the morning. So I play early in the morning, tolerate the crap, play with several other like minded friends and have a good golfing experience at a real good rate.
Course layout is nice, but often windy conditions prohibit this from being any finer.
This is a very nice coarse and probably the best deal in the Bay Area. It's an easy coarse to walk, some very challenging holes, but be ware of playing in the late afternoon.....it can get windy. Included is a nice pro shop and 19th hole.
I enjoyed my twilight round at Shoreline. I am by no means a good golfer and after 35 years of playing the game off and on, I'm going to be "Break 100 on a Good Day" kind of golfer. But I do love the game and would rank Shoreline as one of the nicest courses I ever played.I was out-of-town and without clubs, but the club pro was very supportive of me getting a round in. I called the gent I paired up with earlier in the week at Sunken Gardens and treated him to a round of golf. The twilight rate is a bargain -- just $25. The club rental ($20) was reasonable and they gave me a very nice set of Tour Edge clubs.Shoreline is a links course. They play very long, have lots of bunkers but have less trees than a typical course. It was a very challenging course -- made even harder by the wind. But the scenery was beautiful and the course was in great condition.I played one of my best rounds ever, and was in position to break 100 until sunset cut our round short by a few holes.Their practice and driving range are excellent as well.Michaels Restaurant, located nearby, is truly outstanding. Be sure to eat there before or after your round.
I have always loved Shoreline Golf Links. It is a really nice layout, always kept in great condition, and you can watch pelicans dive for fish in the lake along the 10th hole while you play. Really nice. But unfortunately, our recent experience there was marred but a very rude and ignorant marshal, who felt that the golf course was all about him, and not the golfers who payed $70 to play the golf course. This marshal interrupted our foursome on the front nine while we were still putting out to tell us to hurry it up, even thought there was no one pushing us or waiting to hit their approach shots to the green. When we told the marshal that it was improper to interrupt us during a tournament to tell us to hurry up before we putted out (especially since we were not holding anyone up) he then threatened us by saying that he would call the pro shop and force us to skip playing a hole. This guy was a real piece of work and obviously does not belong on the golf course. Therefore, I would suggest you may want to skip Shoreline Golf Links for your recreation golf until these guys figure it out and understand who their paying customers are.
