Julian is a lovely town with great history and wonderful countryside but the motorcycle gangs were too noisy. The town shoukd be smelling of apple pie and mountain air, except it stinks of motorcycles! It took away from the charm of the place.
We visited downtown and thought we'd check out the Town Hall. Nothing was scheduled for the time of our visit, but one was taken back to the elder days when the locals would set up chairs and view performances of school children and towns people and various groups who wanted to gather. As for us, my husband is a poet so he wanted to practice some of his most recently memorized poems. With an audience of one, I thought he was a hit. This little town is as enjoyable as one can make it.
saw the town's locals put on an old fashioned melodrama whee you can boo/hiss at the bad guys and hurray for the good hero/ heroine ...only cost $10.00/adult and you could even have save your seat , if you came post show finish from the 2 pm one...for the 7: 00 pm show!OK for the jokes and the costuming but heck - it's a small town , with not much going on late night..and the local ' ladies club' make up a funny/ singing group.
We were told to go by for the up to date information for the orchards that would still have apples to pick and found soooo much more! They had a great town map, a listing of the local wineries, restaurants, bakeries, stores and anything else you could want. If that wasn't enough you could ask any questions at the window available. A great one stop shop to help make the most of your stay!
With friends we took a day trip to Julian. Perhaps the best part was the scenic drive. When we arrived we found a seedy, old looking tourist trap town. At first it looks cute however upon spending an hour or so walking around you see there is really not much to see. Since once of our friends is disabled, we were quite surprised that there is hardly any handicapped parking. Perhaps the lowest point of this town is how obvious they made it that tourists are unwelcome is something I haven't seen since decades ago and that is quarter PAY TOILETS. Disgusting. Every story and shop I saw had signs NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS. That was it, we left and did not look back. It is what it is, a dead tourist trap town.
We walked through The Old Town Hall and thought the historical photos were interesting. There wasn't anything going on, it was empty with no one working there in sight. They provide informational materials there.
The Chamber of Commerce offices at the Town Hall are open every day from 10AM to 4PM and can provide answers to most of your questions about Julian. They keep a list of available lodging for the current weekend that covers almost every place in the area.
We went Veteran Day weekend so it was pretty busy. We were able to go to the craft fair and enjoyed it very much as always! It is one of the reasons that we go to Julian near the holidays!
We were in Julian on Thanksgiving weekend. During that time the local crafters put on a craft show in the hall so any other exhibits or information take a back seat to the goodies. It is, however, the kind of craft show one hardly ever sees anymore with local people and a minimum amount of the kind of mass produced things that appear at the bigger events in cities. One tip, if you are there for Thanksgiving, the town provides a free Thanksgiving dinner, in the basement, to all comers, starting at 11 am. I hear it's quite good and we may just plan on it on our next Thanksgiving visit.
What a great way to start off our Thanksgiving weekend! Shoppig the tables in such a quaint Town Hall helped me get my jolly on! The people are very friendly and set the tone for what was a lovely visit in a wonderful community!
I recently wrote a review on the town of Julian. TA put my review under The Wolf Center. We did not visit the center. My review told how the town is over crowded this time of year. I could not find any way to email TA to correct this selection. We could not just select the town of Julian to review. Sorry Wolf Center for the wrong title in the review.
When I was a child some 40 yrs ago, my old fashioned parents would take us up the mountain to the Weed Show which was held inside the Julian Town Hall. The Weed Show is currently no longer but they do have flower shows. I did return to the Julian Town Hall earlier this year (2010). It was amazing to see it unchanged. Town meetings are still held inside this historic building. Old, large photos on the walls, an ongoing arts & crafts show in the basement and various old time theatrical shows put on by the towns people & other events are held here. We had a blast at the Melodrama show "Lips That Touch Wine, Shall Never Touch Mine!" On our way back to LA, we wanted to stop at Jaffe Bros Organic Fruit & Nuts in Valley Center which is 26 miles from Julian. The Town Hall staff lady knew exactly where it was and drew us a map which was so helpful.
