This was one of the few apple farms with any apples left this weekend, but in some ways, what was left was not impressive. We spent at least 30 minutes searching and searching for a decent apple, but most of the apple trees we found had either rotten or heavily bruised apples or we're completely barren, not a single apple hanging. It was frustrating and a bit disappointing. However, we walked through every path and finally came upon a few golden delicious and jonathan apples left. We were able to fill our bag, but many of the apples would be considered mini or even too small to be eaten. If you're coming from Los Angeles, the drive is really not worth it. It is long and windy and with kids, it could be quite tortuous. From San Diego, it's less long, but you would also have to deal with windy roads that may make your kids (and you) carsick. Packing some motion sickness medicine just in case could help. The lines for the porta potty were also pretty bad. We waited nearly 20-30 minutes just to use it and there was no where to wash your hands, so one tip is to use the bathroom BEFORE you arrive or you'll waste a lot of time, and lose those last few good apples left. The bag was a decent size, you could probably fit around 25+ apples in there depending on the size. One additional tip is to go earlier in the season and earlier in the day to have your pick of the best and most apples.
We came to Julian for a day of apple picking and Volcan Valley Apple Farm was not our first destination. We looked at several of the apple farms and came back here and I am so glad we did. They had so many beautiful trees just loaded with apples. The people were friendly and helpful, they gave us samples of each of the types of apples so we had an idea which ones we wanted. The farm was clean and not too crowded. Great family activity and the apples were all so delicious.
