As the lowest point in North America, this is THE must-see in Death Valley. However, it is just one of the many remarkable sites in the park. Just be sure to be cautious because even in the winter it can get hot at Badwater in the middle of the day. And don't forget to drink plenty of water.
Sunset will have some nice views from the mountains, but it will also make it dark earlier here than out in the main valley.Walk out on the salt highway as far as you can. Be sure and admire how far below sea level you really are. The sea level sign on the mountain side is my favorite elevation sign in the park.
this is an excellent place to visit. It is the lowest point in North America and you are 294 ft below sea level. It is absolutely beautiful in its desolation!
Badwater Basin is quite spectacular. It is below sea level - with a great viewing area of the salt basin. You are able to walk out onto the hardened salt - quite unique and a little hard to describe.
We went at sunrise (which was a bit of a bust colour-wise - drizzly day! Who would have thought in Death Valley!) and what really struck me was the quiet. Once we walked out a bit from the car park it was so totally silent - no birds, no trees rustling, just salt pans and silence. Beautiful. Note that the bright white salt hexagon shapes you sometimes see in photos only form after rain - usually they look like the more random brown shapes in most of the traveller photos here.
From the parking lot look up on the rock wall for the sign that marks Sea Level. For most, it will be the farthest they have been below the surface of the sea.
I remembered the 1st time I was at Badwater, there's nothing out there except the wooden sign. This time when I went, the sign is still there but they built a platform & extended a path so that visitors can enjoy a walk on the basin.
Definitely a place to see - being the lowest place in the United States! It is interesting to see the salt flats, the water that has accumulated there, and to look up on the face of the mountains and see the sign for sea level so far above you.
This is on the short list of National Park/Monuments sites that need to be seen (Old Faithful, Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower, etc). There is a short walk on the basin, but it is mostly about being at 282 feet below sea level.
It is a natural beauty that you need to see. Being almost 275 feet below sea level is a unique experience. Visit this and other nearby park points on a nice sunny day and you will enjoy the scene and the calmness that the nature provides. Be sure to pack water, sodas, snacks and food with you because nothing is available any for miles and miles.
If you continue walking past the well-beaten path and into the salt flats, you will see some very interesting salt and mud formations that will make the walk worth it.
The lowest place in North America. The basin is composed of table salt. You can walk on the salt flats. Its best to see this in the cool of the day as the flats are very hot.
This was a highlight (well maybe "LOW-light" since it is below sea level) of our drive throughout Death Valley. It's as though you're on the moon in some respects. Do be sure to get all the salt off your shoes before getting back into your car!
Very worth seeing, interesting to venture off the beaten path and look at the salt flats. I visited in February, and it was very busy, so didn't end up staying too long. VERY hot, wear sunscreen!
