The enormity of this crater blew me away. Powerful winds almost did as well. Never expected to see such an awesome sight in Death Valley.
As you reach the top the the road leading to the crater, the crater opens up before you right when you park facing the crater. Your first thought is "Wow!" The colors of the crater contrast with the dull landscape and you cannot wait to get out of the car. We hiked down into the crater and back out again - tough but worth it. We then hiked up to the Little Ubehebe Crater next to it. The paths are very steep to and from these craters so you should be in shape to hike them even though they are fairly short. Bring your hiking poles if you have them.
This is a very easy site to get to and is very beautiful. Totally takes you by surprise. Very nice!!
this is another must see if you are in Death Valley. Absolutely stunning! It is very windy out by the rim so be prepared. Be sure to take some time and follow the path up the side as there are smaller craters that you can see. Unfortunately my tour did not give us enough time to do it but it is still a great visit. The crater was formed by volcanic action when the molten rock met up with some underground water and blew!! Fascinating!!
Great hike to the bottom, not so great coming back. Go during evening for good light, (photos). Excellent trail around rim of crater.
Easy to get to overlook, very beautiful. You can walk all the way around the rim, or take the steep trail to the bottom.
We felt like we were standing on the moon. Its a very surreal experience. There are no fences to prevent someone from falling in, so be careful with small children.
A little out of the way but Scotty's Castle is a few miles away so do both at the same time. The view from the top is awesome but many people also walk down to the bottom.
Cinder cone in the desert. Amazing, and very high with walk around the rim. No rails and a little scary.
We came to Death Valley with only the intention of seeing Scotty's Castle, but I read on their map about Ubehebe Crater, and it was so close to the Castle that we decided to check it out. It really is an awesome geological feature. I would definitely recommend stopping here, even if you just stay in the parking lot, which is what we did. The crater just kind of takes your breath away, literally (it's really windy) and figuratively. There's also a couple of trails around the rim, and I've read online that you can also hike down to the bottom of the crater. We may be coming back at a later date, and I would definitely like to do the rim trail as there are some smaller craters that can be seen that way.Great feature of Death Valley.
Easy to get to, paved road and parking area and finally, a really cool photographic opportunity awaits you at the Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley. Located only a few miles from Scotty's Castle, the crater is not all that wide, but fairly deep and taking both of those aspects into consideration, the entire crater can be photographed easily with one shot, depending on the angle, of which there are many. When we were there, in the early afternoon, the wind had kicked up pretty good, enough to blow any hat you might be wearing a long ways away, so be prepared for that. If you're up for a good work out, take the hike to the bottom, but be sure and take water with you. This hike is steep, so be prepared for that as well. At a minimum, you've got to see this!
I don't think many people visiting Death Valley go to Ubhebe Crater, they look at a hole in the ground and think,"OK, it's a crater." I understand that but to do so would be to miss out on an incredible place. While it's beautiful to look at, it's a lot of fun to walk around the area. The contrast between the different levels is interesting but to me the main attraction is the sky: The clouds, the sun, the night sky in particular. If you ever wanted to see, really see the Milky Way, this is a fantastic spot to do it from. Depending on the time of year, you can see the whole sky lit up and glowing. It's a certified "dark spot" where there's no light pollution, which is rare these days. It's out of the way and a bit of a drive, but it's worth a visit, both day and night.
Its a nice spot and easy drive to here, we dint have the time to go to the bottom of the crater and it felt difficult too.
We decided to end our day to see UBehebe crater. The views are spectular, but was very windy and a lot cooler than the rest of the valley. Very unique compared the rest of the death valley.
Ubehebe Crater and its little brother ‘Little Hebe’ are very much worth a visit. You need to drive up north on Scotty’s Castle Rd – off 190 some miles north of Furnace Creek Ranch, off where 190 turns from north to west to Stovepipe Wells. Where Scotty’s Castle Rd turns east – right – to the eponymous castle, turn left onto – yes, well, Ubehebe Rd. A few miles later will take you to the parking lot at the western edge of the crater, put there since the eastern wall of the caldera is the most attractive to look at. The view right from the parking lot is breathtaking, but you ain’t seen nothing yet. If you have at least some basic fitness, walk up the admittedly somewhat steep side to the highest point of the crater crated by a steam explosion only about 2000 years ago. The crater has a diameter of roughly half a mile and is between 500 and a good 700 feet deep. A few minutes further will take you to Little Hebe, a much smaller crater, but net to see. You can also walk the perimeter of the crater and even descend down into it. It’s not a long way, obviously, but do consider that it is steep, partly on loose gravelly rocks and that there is no cable car or chair lift back up – just saying. Only people good on their feet and with a bit of fitness should go down into it. It sure is worth it, though; standing down there is awesome.
