There are 5 giraffes in residence here and the viewing platform to observe them is very well laid out. It is elevated so, if you are lucky, you can be eye to eye with one or more of these lovely creatures. We went on a weekday morning so were able to see all the exhibits easily.....This is a rather small zoo, so timing your visit might influence the experience.
This compact attraction can be seen in two hours, or it can amuse you all day. Located in beautiful Land Park, each exhibit is carefully done. There is a wide range of birds and smaller animals, and the giraffe exhibit is a favorite with kids. There's a platform up 15 feet which allows you to feed the giraffes at their level. The pink flamingos are breathtaking and there are ducks and waterbirds galore. There are several snack stands and a nice gift shop (check out the rolling weasel toy).Overall, great for all ages. A true gem.
So we took my granddaughters to the Zoo and then across the parking lot to Fairytale Land and we had such a fun day. They even got me to climb aboard the carousel w them, 1st time I've been on one of them in many years. Highly recommend this place for a fun filled day and pack a lunch as tgere is a nice park right there too, to have lunch in between both places.
It is small Zoo but what I reallly liked is how all the animals are treated and the visitor can still view them great and enjoy them.
The Sacramento Zoo is one of my favorite zoos. The have a really great primate section including lemurs, gibbons, chimpanzees, orangutans, and others that I can't remember the name of. There are also 3 new tiger cubs on exhibit with their mama and papa. At the giraffe exhibit you can actually feed the giraffes! (Check the schedule and get there early in the summer months). And for the you and young at heart, I recommend the train ride. It's a nice little 10 minute ride.
My two granddaughter's and I really enjoyed our visit to the Sacramento Zoo! We had not been here for several years. There have been so many updates and newer animal exhibits it makes it so exciting to see all the changes! We sat for over an hour watching the monkeys exhibit. We had such a good time we decided we would go more often. If you get tired walking around for extra cost take the train ride its a good little tour of the zoo and a fun ride for any children
The Sac Zoo is a wonderful little zoo. We've been more times than I can count in the last 12 years. Sometimes it is very quiet and sleepy, but every now and then the animals are alert and animated and you get to see something very special. The zoo has done a good job over the years updating exhibits. It is a great place to spend a couple of hours.
It could be bigger, seems to be over to quickly, for higher and very early ages great. Close to most areas of Sacramento including suburbs, bring a lunch you are in the park with a huge pond, and lots of walking space
kids like the animals.Foods choices limited so eat before handliked how you go in one way and out another in case YOU get lost [kids never do just us parents]
The snow leopard pictured Is neat. They also have an animal I had not seen before, a red Panda. It is compact but has lots of animals, most of which you can get up close and personal.
Clean and well maintained and a little pricey. Fun venue for all ages. Lots of critters with zoo staff throughout. They will often have a bird or animal out of their cage for touch and learn sessions. Kids love the giraffes that can be fed and petted as well as the small train ride tour. Great family outing.
The location is nice, the natural landscape adds to the charm of the zoo. I wish there were more animals, though but maybe it is because of this time of year (January). Overall a good experience.
I am not a fan of zoos and circuses , but I have to admit that this zoo is just the right size for a day trip . Plenty to see and more than enough to keep a hyper active child amused . Animals seem to be in great condition and well card for . Informative details and educational as well. Try to time it for a " free day " and the trip is the best adventure you can have for no money . Well worth a visit .
For its size, the Sacramento Zoo is excellent. Over the years (I've lived here since 1973) the zoo has continuously upgraded its animal enclosures and build a new veterinary hospital. Its proximity to UC Davis's veterinary school ensures that its animals receive first class care. It has been unable to grow, surrounded as the park is by urban development, but they have made the best of the space they have. The zoo no longer has a hippo. When longtime resident Jewel passed away a few years ago, they knew that by today's standards her old enclosure was inadequate. Instead of replacing her, the zoo greatly enlarged its giraffe enclosure and added two more giraffes to their family. It's quite a lovely place. Nor does the zoo have an elephant, a disappointment for some. But they have an above-average reptile collection, a charming group of resident chimpanzees, and a handsome lion couple who recently gave birth to triplets. A small train takes children (and their parents) around the zoo. It's a good way to get your bearings when you go for the first time. Kampala Cafe serves good casual food for children and adults. You can eat indoors or outside on a nice, sunny day. The docents in yellow shirts or jackets are well-trained and give excellent tours and talks. It's not San Diego, but I highly recommend you check it out.
I am not a fan of zoos in general. However, I have come to this one several times over the past five years and believe it is a good one. Yes, it is pretty small but the enclosures are big for the animals (for the most part) and they have a wide variety of animals on display. The train ride is cute for the five and under set and there is a nice carousel. We are particularly fond of the screaming apes (not monkeys as they do not have tails). They are crazy loud but do respond back and they made my seven year old and I laugh really hard. The area where the giraffes are is also very nice. This zoo does not take more than a few hours to walk around but it is a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon. For those not native to SAC, the zoo is in an area within a huge park system and right across the street from Fairy-Tale Town. A fun interactive play area for those five and under.
