For the price of 45 minutes of your time you will be treated to a tour of the fully furnished mansion with a very friendly and knowledgable guide. I was surprised that you were let into almost all of the rooms...not just peering in from a roped doorway. Here is a chance to get a brief glimpse into California history that you probably didn't know about. Worth it if you are a history buff, antiques collector or just curious about how the wealthy people lived 150 years ago in California.
The place has been fantastic restored and it is a very nice place to visit. you can spend 1 - 2 hrs viewing it. really enjoyed seeing the architecture so well preserved.
A brief google search of things to see in Sacramento led us to the museum. Our tour was narrated by a lovely elderly woman who knew her stuff. When we walked into the living room I literally gasped - so huge and so beautiful! Definitely recommend it.
Its worth a stroll through, especially if you are a victorian architecture fan; and its size will impress. Well maintained, though the art on the walls and statuary are a bit underwhelming, though there are a couple california landscapes worth your attention.
Annie was our extraordinary docent on this amazing tour of this amazing structure. (We travel a lot and say she is one of the best we have ever had!) We absolutely loved this house and the history and the lore. Do not miss it!
Wow! I am so impressed with this place and happy to have stumbled upon it. The tour was fantastic; Jolene did a wonderful job. The tour is free (a pleasant surprise when I arrived!), and the home has been beautifully restored to its 1872 glory. I highly recommend a visit!
We had gone to see the Governor's mansion but some rooms were closed so we ran all the way to this mansion. We arrived just a few minutes too late for the tour and asked if we could join it. After a little consideration, we were allowed to. Strange as we were, in fact, the only people on this tour! Nevertheless, once we had started, our guide was very helpful and informative about the house, the family and subsequent uses of the house. We really enjoyed it.
Although, now this beautiful mansion hosts the visiting dignitaries from foreign nations, it was also used as an orphanage once! We were impressed by the tour. The beautiful architecture, the lavish furnishings and the fine furniture were very captivating! It was good to get a glimpse into the grandeur of Stanford family and inspirational to know how the family dealt with the untimely death of their only child ... they gave us the Stanford University!
The Leland Stanford mansion tour is amazing. Do not miss this tour, only downside was we did not get to see more of it. And the tour should of been twice as long. So much to see and so much history.
There is a free guided tour which starts with a movie. The mansion is quite beautiful and the tour was very interesting.. Our guide talked about the Mansion and told stories about the Stanfords and how the house was used through the years. She also told us the current governors can use the mansion to host functions. The tour last about an hour and is well worth it.
The history is very interesting, but my favorite part is the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship that went into creating this historic mansion. A definite must see.
I had been to Sacramento several times, but had not made it downtown to tour the Stanford Mansion. I didn't know what I was missing! A beautifully restored mansion in the heart of Sacramento, the Stanford Mansion is worth the hour tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, not only about the family history, but also about the period in which it was built and the political culture of Sacramento at that time. It was wonderful to see all the original pieces still intact, including tapestries, window treatments and dinnerware. Lots of stairs to climb, but the bedrooms cannot be missed!
There is a lot of love, care, and contributions put into this place to make it outstanding! It actually has a working office for the governor and they also host important functions for the State. Amazing to see original furniture and so much of the home was saved from being stripped over time. The mansion is a great focal point for important California history. My only disappointment was that the gift store was closed when we came out after our wonderful tour. I will just have to return!
The tour starts with a talk that demonstrates very effectively how the house looked originally, how it was expanded and how it was even raised in level. The result of all these changes was the magnificent mansion that you are then taken round. Although the original house was not built by Leland Stanford, he was responsible extending and raising it, and as you go round you learn a great deal about the life of this politician and railroad mogul. The building has brilliantly restored and as you go round you get a real feel for life in Californian during Victorian times.
If you enjoy history and historic mansions this is the tour for you. The docent was very good and it is FREE! You may want to read up on Leland Stanford before going to the museum because he was involved in many things including the transcontinental railroad. He had a major impact on Sacramento, and of course the Stanford University in Palo Alto is named after his son Leland Stanford Jr. Don't miss out on this tour!
