twist and turns, loops, giant trees on top of the road- it is amazing. it is exhilarating! i had so much driving down this road.
We were surprised to see the Generals Highway was open. A great scenic ride with lots of places to stop along the way. The large trees, vistas, meadows, creeks are the best. Love going during the off-season.
We were in the park in Feb, 2015. We brought along chains but they were absolutely not necessary that day. There was very little traffic along e highway so lots of opportunities to mosey along and take photos. There were many turn outs that highlighted scenic views. So beautiful! (Check before you go to see if chains are necessary...although signs emphasize that they could be needed at any time.)
Wish we had had the Miata instead of the pickup! The good thing about having to drive slowly is the gorgeous scenery. We had been told that you might have to have chains, but we called the ranger station and they told us the roads were clear. There was still snow along side the road, but not on it. There was very little traffic in January, but please use the turn-outs if you have cars following you.Great valley views and the stonework walls were cool-looking and a comfort as we rounded the million curves.
Scary driving, don't be in a hurry. Takes 1 hour+ to drive 30 miles, saw a car actually go too fast and off the edge.
I love mountain roads and their breathtaking views and this mountain road is especially beautiful. I think that of the whole park this was my favorite part. It is not a road that I would want to drive a big rig through, but our car made it just fine. There are lots of scenic turnouts and gorgeous views, plenty of photo ops. Would love to make the trip again.
Took the scenic route from Bakersfield to las Vegas via Sequoia National Park and death valley. Wow!! What an awesome drive. Beats the freeway anytime. Beautiful scenery, fresh air lots or places to stop. If you have the time take the scenic route. Nothing fun happens on a freeway
Beautiful drive through the mountains. Lots of giant trees. If you don't like driving slowly on windy roads, then you might not like it so much. But its really spectacular, and worth a drive through, even if you can't stop to see the trees.
We truly enjoyed the twisty, view soaked road. If it's not panoramic sites, it's the huge trees crowding the asphalt, or the 10mph hairpins. We were lucky to be there in October when few were on the road, so we could enjoy it. Also, we often drove very early in the morning when no one else was up. Empty roads are fun, and this one was beautiful. My husband said the highway south of Wuksachi Lodge has to be his favorite piece of road ever, even more than the roads through the Alps.
Don't miss this during your visit. This is one of the primary attractions and well worth the time. You will surely enjoy it!
They've widened the roads and improved them with lots of turnouts and signs to indicate slower speeds.
Great views up the mountainside, very winding road. Just beware of road construction, some delays but I am sure they will be finished soon.
You take this road to get up to General Sherman and a lot of other must-see attractions at the park. While driving up, you may be thinking, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" But just enjoy the scenery and pull over often to take in the view. Make sure you get gas before you go in the park. This will just set your mind at ease (there are no places to get gas, as far as I know, and you're going uphill and not getting great gas mileage). If you're a nervous wreck while driving on windy roads (like I am), try to go the speed limit (you'll be OK!), and pull over at the turnouts to let the speed demons pass you! Conversely, be courteous and don't tailgate!
You'll enjoy the drive if you have the stomach for back-to-back curves. Careful at night as we saw a black bear crossing the Kings Highway and deer grazing just off the road...it is narrow!
