This was a very special experience. It was very historical and very interesting to visit this Mission. So full of history and interesting things to see. Worth the time if you are in the area.
this was worth the drive and is highly recommended. it's a great attraction for the weekend traveler and is highly encouraged.
This is a Roman Catholic Cathedral yet I saw the name "basilica" on the wall. No wonder His Holiness John Paul II paid a visit here and made a personal prayer before the statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem, on September 17, 1987. The carmel Mission has a longer history than the nation:)...when driving along the Pacific Coast Hwy, pls don't miss this hidden treasure!
This is my favorite mission in CA. I've visited many times over the years, sometimes just to spend half an hour sitting in the beautiful garden, sometimes in the church. You can smell flowers in the garden, talk to the ghosts of long-deceased Spaniards. Architecturally, I find it to be exquisite, with the two dissimilar spires perfectly in balance. Restoration has been masterful. My favorite time is later afternoon...afterwards, I head to Carmel Bay, to watch the sunset. If you wanted to see one mission, this is the one.
The mission in Carmel is educational about the period history and is an interesting and beautiful place! It is used for weddings and concerts so it is kept up, and it is very special in the string of missions in California. It has a lovely garden and museum, and a cute little gift shop. Don't miss it!
This mission was our last stop of the day and it was lovely. I especially liked the small cemetery with abalone shells on all the crosses. The church was very pretty unfortunately there was a wedding rehearsal when we we there so we couldn't really approach the altar. Really beautiful area the back drop is incredible.
We always enjoy a visit to the lovely Carmel Mission with its sweet, peaceful gardens, its beautiful sanctuary and the great connection with California history that it offers. It should be a must for anyone who visits the area.
Such a beautiful place. When I had a chance to go there was a wedding going on. The oldest Indian is buried there also. A must see for many mission lover.
San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo Mission was headed by Father Junipero Serra mission from 1770 till he died in 1784. The grounds, museum, and visitor center are beautiful to see.I stopped to see it when in Carmel. The Carmel Mission is open to the public on Monday through Saturday. There is a small admission charge. It is also a very active Roman Catholic congregation in the area and holds regular mass. There is a parking area beside the mission.
A total (re)treat in a wonderful unspoiled setting.Resting place of the soon to be canonized Fransiscan priest Junipero Serra.Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch is five minutes away
Adults $6.50, seniors $4.00. We saw the museum, shop, church, lot of old icons, lots of cacti and plants. It was fairly well laid out, although, we ended up backtracking a bit a couple of times. The church was gorgeous, especially with all the poinsettias around it. It was not too crowded, so we got to take our time and read lots of information. The shop was small, but had a lot in it. The grounds were well taken care of.
It will be recommended to spend an hour in this place to understand how California was governed by the spaniers colonos thru the implementation a their believes. It was the purpose of this Missions strategically located in California and the reasons why miost places have names in Spanish like: Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Carmel, san Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, and so on .....
I love the missions; have since I was a little girl. Unfortunately, I haven't taken the opportunity to see them all, so jumped on the chance to see this one, and was not disappointed. It is beautiful, has lots of local history and we talked to a docent for a while to get some interesting facts. The sculpture by Jo Mora of Junipero Serra's deathbed was fabulous, along with the old adobe belonging to the Munras family with personal effects. Historical figures, Serra, Lasuen, Crespi, are buried here. Well worth the trip if you like California/mission history.
We have been to all the California Missions, and this is one of the most reveared ones. Sunday Mass presents the opportunity to sing with a professional choir. The gardens around the mission are alive with natural flowers and the flower of humanity that visit this ancient place. The museum is full of artifacts, well annotated and labelled. There is a little chapel devoted to the late Pope John Paul II, now Saint Carol Wojtyla who visited this mission during one of his pilgrimages throughout the world.
Beautiful place to visit! Very tranquil and peaceful! I was hoping to see a service in progress, but maybe next time. Will definitely return!
