Good views for a back to nature person. If the ocean and sand is your thing, you will like this place. It can get very crowded.
One of our best stops on the side of Pacific Coast Highway was the Point Mugu rocks. There weren't many places to park here, but it was free. We didn't go into the state park because of the $12 parking fee since we didn't have a lot of time to spend there. We just stopped long enough to take pictures and enjoy the beautiful scenery. There's no commercial developments around here. Just nature and campgrounds. This was the most peaceful stop we made during our drive up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. I'd highly recommend it for hikers and campers.
Lots of hiking trails, hills, flowers in spring, occasional ponds, growing back well after the fires 2 years ago, go the top of Mt Mugu and sign the register!
We hiked the scenic and overlook trail starting at the campground. The views of the mountains and the ocean are amazing. The hike takes a couple hours and is around 3 miles in total.
I have been going to this beach since the mid 60s and it is still one of my favorites. Great views. Worth every penny. The drive up PCH is amazing so it a win win outing
Small fee to park. But you get to hike and take in nature at its best. It's not Big sur but its a smaller so Cal version. worth every penny.
The $12 entrance fee is more expensive than I thought considering the size of this beach. It is relatively remote so not as crowded as other popular beaches. Good place for group barbecue with enough parking spaces. You can also play volleyball or soccer on the beach, but make sure to remove all the stones in your field before playing.
We came to the Sycamore Pk (Pt Mugu State Pk) on 28 July intending to hike. At the entrance we were met by a laconic, bored ranger. We asked if their was a map of the trails "No", are the trails very arduous "I don't know". How long are the loops? Is ther a 1- hour loop? " I don't know" "I don't know" Well, is there any info about the trails? "Ther's a board over there" We said we'd like to consult the board he said "$12" Unable to give us the slightest info, no attempt to be helpful, unwilling to let us even see the trail map before paying $12 -we left. This park is certainly fine for those are already familiar with the place. NOT for older tourists like us who are not great hikers. Unless you know the paths, unless you have your own guide book you better hope you don't encounter this particular ranger. We drove to Leo Caririllo Park, were met by a friendly ranger who gave us a trail map, paid the $12 parking fee and enjoyed our hike and the beach. We were later told that Sycamore hasa better variety of trails so it's a pity that visitors are expected to pay just to see trail map!
Took the La Juanita loop trail. It is gorgeous and we'll worth the $8 parking fee. Bring your camera and water bottle. I want to go back soon
We stay at the Thornehill broome campsite every year. It's great, campsites are large and open. You have a full view of the ocean and all its wildlife. This trip we have seen humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and pelicans. Great place to stay for the money. Arrive early for a good spot.
If your driving up the PCH this is a wonderful spot to stop to stretch your legs and take some photos. That's all the time we had, but I'd love to come back to enjoy the hiking and beach.
I really love this place. It provides options of hikes where you can do more if you want and stay flat if you want.Add to that the amazing views from the mountains and the ocean. Breathtaking! There's good /reasonable restroom in the area.If you like to camp there's also a place. There's daily fee to pArk 12usd for general.
I hiked to Mugu peak several times (Chumash trail?). Also hiking La Jolla Canyon and Ray Miller to the overlook trail. Typically you have a steep climb up until you get to a plain which is mostly just grass lands but the climb in has interesting rock formations, and interesting plant life. The recent fire however turned everything black on those two trails. However we did see three deer there, perhaps because there is no place to hide now. Still and interesting and fun hike.
We did a short walk with the kids even walked up the sand dune and beach time . Nice clean well marked. Needs more parking.
If you're looking for some challenging trails for hiking or mountain biking, they're here. If you're looking for moderate trails to help you improve your skills, they're here. If you're looking for a place to bring the whole family and the bikes, it's here! This is one of the best parks for bikes and families I know of. Parking fills up fast so plan to get here early. If you're not familiar with the park, get a map and study it well. Some trails gain 2100 feet above sea level. Some go even higher. There are sweet single tracks, and serious climbs for advanced riders. On hot days, the ocean breeze keeps the canyon cool so you can get a little shade. Recent fires swept through the area and wiped out a lot of brush. It will return but for now, PLEASE show your respect for trails and stay on them. Don't invent your own! You'll be amazed at the rebirth and recovery happening all around you. A great lesson for kids to see this important cycle of life. Bring a picnic lunch. You can finish your day at the beach. It's the best place to experience all that California can offer in a single day. Oh, and listen carefully - those weird bird sounds you hear are flocks of wild parrots!
