What a place of history. The pioneers and ranchers of the West are preserved in this soddy post office.

This place along oilfield-busy Hwy 85 is easy to miss, but check it out. It is often spoken of as a "sod post office," but that's not quite right. The building incorporates both earth and timber, drawing on the old-country building knowledge of the Ukrainian chap who built it. (The Ukrainian settlement region of western North Dakota stretches to the south of here, either side of Hwy 85.) Gail and the other women who mind the old post office can tell good stories about the building and community history. Interesting artifacts inside. Site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here's another tip about the locale: I always like to make the (gentle) climb up the butte itself, both because of the interesting rock formations atop it and also for the great views of the surrounding countryside.
