I love going to this museum every time I'm in town. Last year I took my dad to the county museum where I now live, and he was polite, but he said it can't hold a candle to the SCMM, and I have to agree. There are so many exhibits...I always see something new every time. And I love the old house and furniture, too.
This was a really pleasant way to spend part of an afternoon, moreso because I was the only visitor there for the entire time, and also because the volunteer at the desk [an older man] was most helpful in telling me about the house's history, and pointed out various displays and single objects that had interesting stories behind them. The museum is in a somewhat residential area and is a huge red-brick mansion of 4 floors, plus a large basement and huge front porch. It is furnished with original 1900s-1910s objects to give an authentic feel of when the owner---a lumber baron from Germany, George Lutz, and his family---lived there. There are lots of polished wood stairs to climb, and creaky floorboards, as well as glowing stained-glass windows! My favourite rooms were the small, crowded kitchen and pantry, containing the "newest" appliances from 1900 to the 1950s! The dining room has a surrounding wall mural showing Black Forest scenes from George Lutz's homeland. There's also a room dedicated to former Jamestown resident, the jazz singer Peggy Lee. The museum also houses local archives of the area. The nicest thing about this museum was that none of the rooms were roped off, so you can wander at will. Be sure and look at the pretty white gazebo on the museum's grounds. All in all, much better than so many other "historic house" museums!
I've visited lots of local history museums over the years, in the U.S. and Europe and this is one of the best I've seen anywhere. It is organized, clean, interesting and packed with things to look at and learn about. It is clear that there is community pride in this town. Thank you for keeping history alive!
Took my grandson to the museum and he enjoyed it. The basement with its items were especially of interest to him. Staff was accommodating and helpful.
This home is an architectural gem with a wonderful collection of Stutsman County History. Very well done. Worth a visit!
The people that work here are very helpful. I came here asking for information on a ghost town north of here--Vashti. There wasn't any information at the library or museum, so the man working there put me in touch with several people he knew were from around the area. He made phone calls, and I talked with one of the board members that happened to be outside doing some work. I'm just very impressed with how helpful everyone was there.
This is worth a trip to Jamestown to see the former Lutz mansion built in 1907. Mr. George Lutz (German immigrant) was in the lumber business. There are 3 floors packed with antiques, etc. There is also a basement that has a post office, medical room, country store and barber/beauty shop displaced. Everything is well documented. The museum is free but donations are gladly accepted. You could easily spend more time here if you wanted.
We had an extra day in Jamestown and decided to see the Stutsman County Museum. The house inself is worth seeing besides all of the interesting things they have collected in the museum. It's 3 floors, including an attic with several rooms and a large basement. It has Tiffany glass and a lot of nice woodwork. The kitchen had a collection of old appliances. There was a room with a collection of dolls, I believe in the attic. The attic also had a room full of old treadle sewing machines. We had some trouble finding this museum. We asked a policeman who thought it might be near the police station and it was. It's northwest of the downtown area. The house isn't particularly attractive on the outside, but the inside is definitely worth seeing. There was a stair chair that went to the basement and, I think, up a back stairway to at least the second floor. There is no fee, but they take donations.
This free museum is a must see in Jamestown. It is very well put together. You can wander through all three stories of this house enjoying collections in each themed room. There are many historic photos on the walls. The staff knew the history of the home and the family who built it -- we felt like we got a personal tour. We spent more time than we thought we would, enjoying all of the interesting collections. The museum is easy to find and parking on the street is free.
this house is so amazing, i wish i could live in it. take the guided tour and listen to all the cool facts about the man who came over from germany and built this place. he had wood imported from the black forest in germany and all this crazy awesome stuff. it's a lovely mansion with tons of history.
