Every single person who passed us on their way down told us "going down is even harder". At the time, panting our way uphill, we couldn't imagine that to be true, but they were right. The hike is a steep climb from the beginning and I was grateful for the hiking sticks someone had left at the trail head. The hard work is worth it, the lookouts are lovely. All that lifting your legs did getting you up there, will make the descent slightly painful and your knees won't be completely happy. At one trail marker you can appreciate the humor of the hand-written signage: "Scenic way down" and "Just Down". Sturdy shoes, sufficient water, snacks, wind-proof jacket and healthy knees are essential for this hike.At the last lookout, puppy dog/ old fire, before the summit, it can get very windy.6.9 mile loop. 2800 feet elevation gain
This Columbia Gorge hike on the Washington side a short distant from Stevenson WA is very popular but not a hike for the casual walker or someone more accustomed to flip flop or bare foot walks on the beach. the initial mile is a steady climb up and if you feel a sense of accomplishment when you get to the trail marker separating the more difficult from the less difficult trail, I'd suggest going with the more difficult trail. It really wasn't any more difficult than the first mile and, as a bonus, it will be about a half mile less in length. Not that you will fully appreciate that by the time you get to the summit. it is a work out, bring plenty of water and a nice lunch or snack to enjoy at the top. My daughter and I did this hike when the meadows near the summit were in full bloom but I expect even when the flowers aren't out you will marvel at the vista. Plus you will feel a sense of accomplishment after you return to the parking lot. the descent can be difficult on knee and calve muscles, take your time. On the return we opted for the less difficult trail and it provided for more level trail in places but was a steady decline for almost the entire length. Plan on 5-6 hours unless you plan on a boot camp style ascent and return.
Looking forward to hiking this trail again in 2013! If an amazing vista is your thing when searching for a kick-butt trail, look no further. For this reason alone many Oregonians & Washingtonians flock to Dog Mountain trail If it's wildflower season be prepared to arrive at the trailhead early or know that the parking lot maybe full and have a couple backup trails to head to.Wildflower season includes such lovely and easily recognizable columbine, camas, Indian paintbrush-and in amazing quantity! You quite literally walk through a huge field of these the last mile from the apex of the trail... They are your carpet as you look out over a scenic notch of the Columbia River Gorge and admire the rock formation on the Oregon side.Ahhhh! And getting *to* the top is no small feet. Prepare for atleast 3 1/2 hours to take the mean switchbacks that make most of the trail (tho you go up the western trail you'll experience a bit of a softer switchback series, it's easier on the knees and less slippery coming down) and remember to pace yourself coming downhill. More accidents from people picking up speed on the downward slope and loosing their footing. Trekking poles and good traction shoes are highly suggested. This trail is not for the faint of heart nor the unfit. Bring lots of water & carboliscious snacks and take the time you need to experience a fat-burner of a hike. One more thing - as with nearly every gorge hike expect to see dogs on the trail. HOWEVER THERE IS NO WATER SOURCE -- BRING WATER & WATERDISH FOR YOUR DOG. And of course please be courteous and be prepared to pickup your ooches poop.
Dog Mtn is a classic Gorge hike. It is a pretty steep one. Round trip is about 8 miiles. Watch for poison oak on the lower section especially near the parking area. Watch for ticks in spring. You do need a Northwest Forest pass to park there. You can buy one there.
