I'm a local, and I know for a fact that this place is awful. Horses aren't well taken care of, and from what I can tell some of the horses are drugged (droopy bottom lip). The because the horses are so old, they don't even wanna move. True, not all old horses are bad, but the reason they are old and go slow is mostly because 99% of the people riding them are beginners.I'd suggest the one right across the street. Great Guides, horses are well taken care of. Keep in mind though that these horses have 12 hour days and get a 15 minute break in between 45 minute rides (thats plenty of break, horses are made for endurance), so if they don't really want to trot for you who could blame them.
our granddaughter wanted to ride a horse but she had never been on one before so she was a little frighten about the idea to ride one. the young lady at skippers assured my granddaughter that it would be okay to ride the horse and she would lead the horse around the lot so nothing would happen to her.
My husband and I went to Long Beach specifically to ride the horses. He had never been on one and I remembered riding horses from this place when I was younger. This is the perfect spot for a beginner and the price is absolutely unbelievable at only $25/person. We rode down to the beach with 2 guides and even got up to a trot a few times. We were out about an hour which was definitely worth the money spent!! I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to give horseback riding a try but can't stand the thought of spending hundreds of dollars to do so.
We found this place on the web and were excited to ride on the beach. It's early in the season, so many places only operate on weekends. Upon arriving, we were a little disheartened by the conditions of the "facility." I use that term very loosely as the location consists of a mobile horse coral and a shack with three people crammed in. The entire place appeared to be very worn down and in disarray. Most of the horses were sitting down (I now know a huge warning sign). The two of us riders were "paired" with a horse and were off in a matter of minutes with two "guides." Our horses both required considerable coaxing to get them to even get up on their feet. All the horses were wet and muddy. Upon questioning, our horses were 26 and 16 years old. The guides horses were both under 10 years old. The "guides" paired me (200#) with the 26 year old horse and my 100# friend with the "younger" horse. For the entire ride the 26 year old horse walked slower than the rest, bottom lip drooping, requiring the other riders to stop and wait periodically. This horse would sometimes trot to catch up on his own, but never once responded to instructions to do so by me. On the return leg of the trip, he walked even slower, frequently attempting to stop, requiring the guide to nudge him along. I honestly felt the horse was going to just stop and die on the beach. On several occasions the "guides" would gallop around and take little diversions from the set route with their younger more capable horses, almost flaunting just how sad our horses were in comparison. I readily admit that I do not know the laws for animal care in this state, nor do I know what is an acceptable minimum for horse care or age to work a horse. I will say that following this experience, this operation appears to be really pushing that limit. I left with a sinking feeling in my stomach about their condition.
We had a great time! The price was very reasonable. The horses seemed well treated, and the guides were on top of things. When we were on the beach they intervened quickly and cleanly twice- when motorcycles came too close and when a dog came too close, and made sure there were no issues. The downsides- they didn't know how to work the credit card machine, the helmets were TERRIBLE (I would HIGHLY recommend bringing your own bike helmet) and they didn't really ask us about riding experience, etc. beforehand. But, everything was fine and it was a good experience. One of us was a first time rider and he enjoyed it and felt well taken care of overall.
What is wrong with this people? I took my family from Seattle to visit long beach for a weekend, so i figured why not not rent a horse and have fun with the kids, i came to this place because in their website says that the horses are perfect for beginners to advanced riders. now my oldest son has Asperger's (is a mild form of autism) he has never ridden a horse before so he didn't know how steer or stop the horse; i thought the people who run this nasty business would actually take the time to explain the riders how to do the basic stop or steer. now lets start with the stinky lady who runs the place: she kept smoking the whole ride next to my kids yelling and cursing left and right because my son didn't know who to steer the damn horse, hello lady there's people that sometimes have certain conditions and it takes more than one time to explain how things works, but i guess this uneducated old lady didn't even attend school her entire life, she treats the customers like crap (maybe because she was treated and raised like a horse too) the corral is filthy and poor maintained (My father had a farm when i was a kid so i know how a decent corral should look like) the horses are all hurt they all limp and stuff the worst part was when this STU**D LADY spanked my horse because according to her i was behind ( i was riding with my 5 year old we almost fell down) do yourself a favor never go to this nasty place full of uneducated people.
