Great place to pull off the road and take a short hike to a beautiful waterfront. Outstanding views and lots of wildlife.

We camped here 3 nights as our first stop on San Juan islands. Weather was perfect, the whole island is very quiet, no traffic. Easy to get around the island, lovely village market. Although there was no shower facility at the campground, we enjoyed our stay here.

A great place to put into the water and go for a paddle. Water in the area seems very protected and calm. Right across the spit is a small private island. You can paddle around the private island and the water isn't choppy at all. Nice place to have a picnic, and they have camping too. And a public restroom!

Take a walk down to the bottom of the hill and head out onto the spit. This is a beautiful place to take a walk. Kayak rentals are available too. There are picnic tables with a great view of the water.

I was going to camp here this past weekend but changed my mind last minute and stayed at Moran on Orcas. Still made a jaunt out to Lopez to check this park out. Lots of trails and beautiful vistas. The spit was windy, but still enjoyable. Would probably be really fun with a kayak or dinghy. I got a sunburn in April. Unheard of. Good birding .. saw some pintail ducks, mew gulls, turkey vultures, Canadian geese, bufflehead ducks, white crowned sparrows and could hear some woodpeckers. Good spot for handicapped as well because there is 1 parking space down on the spit so a handicap person doesnt have to trek down the hill. Lots of picnic tables and a couple shelters. Campground looks good too. Unfortunate that there are no car spots down on the spit level, but it is still a nice wooded area to camp in.

In March 2014 many of the camping sites were still closed (and muddy from recent rains). There were a few sites available at the top (on the hill). These sites are large and have a lot of privacy but no views. There are 4 to 6 sites that are down on the water. These water sites have very little privacy but incredible views of the bay! You can watch the ferry go by and walk all around the beach and Spencer Spit. Beware that it is quite a walk down the hill to the beach sites and thus a hike back UP the hill. You can not park your car right next to these sites. It is still worth it, but just consider how much camping stuff you are going to haul up/down the hill. Bathrooms were clean with flush toilets (but no showers). As an additional FYI, I found people on this tiny island very friendly; I highly recommend Lopez Island! Note: there are very few restaurants on the island so it is important to bring food and drinks with you (or at least snacks!).

We arrived here on the first weekend that Dan with Outdoor Adventures was setting up kayaks at the beach kiosk. We asked about the sunset trip and were told to let him know as otherwise he was heading back on an earlier ferry. We decided to take the outing and are so glad we did. Wow!! It was just us, Dan, and another young guide who was helping out for the first time. We got incredible attention and Dan knows his stuff. Got to hold a purple starfish they pulled off the rocks and had seals following us around. We stayed way beyond sunset into true darkness and got to experience bioluminescent algae....watching the wake from the boat and paddles glow in the dark. Honestly, we could have taken this trip every night. Thanks for an incredible kayaking venture, Dan!

great view, flat trail, wildlife and beautiful wild flowers. We stumbled upon this park while exploring the spit and even though the sun was setting, we couldn't resist the beautiful setting and marked trails. We watched geese ambling across the meadow and sea birds skimming the water as the sun set. Best hike on the island!

Was not crowded and you could walk a long ways before coming to the channel. Good views. Did not visit the camp grounds but the sign said it was full.

We took an evening guided kayak trip with "Dandelion Dan." It was the best experience of the entire Lopez Island trip. He was informative about wildlife, history, kayaking and kept is informed and helped us tremendously with the entire experience. I highly recommend using OA's services for kayaking around the Island.

A few years ago, we decided to do some camping trips. I didn't grow up with camping, but I wanted my children to have an opportunity to enjoy all the great things camping has to offer. Because we started a little later in life than most families, we soon discovered that there were some things that we like to prioritize in order to make out trips as enjoyable as possible.One of the things we really appreciate is to enjoy nature by slowing down, disconnecting from our usual hectic lives, and having a little solitude. In order to achieve this, we like a campsite that has a fair bit of privacy. It isn't that we don't want to see or talk to other campers, we're happy to do that! But we do like to be able to retreat to our site and not be visible to others, and have enough distance that there is a reasonable chance that others music or conversations will not be in the forefront of what we hear.Spencer Spit filled all our wishes! We chose our site online from an accurate and helpful description and booked ahead of time. When we arrived, we checked in with a park ranger who explained where everything was, gave us a map and asked us if we would like some firewood delivered!! (Yes, please!) When we arrived at our site, we found that the photos were very accurate, (this is not always the case!) and its size and configuration was exactly what we were expecting. Facilities, which include lovely clean flush toilets, sinks with polished metal 'mirrors', electrical outlet, and several well-placed water sources, were close by. There are no showers at this campground, so plan accordingly. We had a lovely, extended length picnic table and fire ring.There is a playground for small children near the main washrooms as well.Not far away, there are trails down to the 'spit' which is a beautiful long beach where you can walk for hours, picnic, paddle in the water and a host of other things. The park has many beautiful trails, and the staff is friendly and very knowledgable. While there is much to do in the park itself, Lopez island also offers many wonderful things to see and do. We used our campsite as a base to explore other parks, beaches, the village, and the beautiful scenery. The village, although small, has an excellent grocery store, places for coffee, ice cream, and several eateries of varying kinds. We truly loved this place, and as we plan our next visit, we now know that we can easily do any shopping for food right there on the island, rather than bringing supplies from home. This adds to the convenience for us in a very nice way.We highly recommend this campground and area for a wonderful experience!

Spencer Spit is a nice state park with easy access and great views. If your into bird watching, there are plenty of different birds in the protected areas (early morning and evening). If you check local island bulletin boards there might be an open birding group visiting. Spencer Spit is a large enough area that even with a big group, you will still feel like you have enough of your own area. There are plenty of warm smooth rocks and clean sand to take a little nap and get some sun. For the ultimate experience though, don't stay on the spit. Take the evening/sunset guided kayak tour. The cost is $40.00 per person. The guide (Dan) directed us around Frost Island, where we saw starfish and bald eagles. Later, we saw plenty of seals, porpoises, and kingfishers. We have kayaked with several different guides/businesses on the island is this is our favorite. Overall, Spencer Spit will be enjoyed for free (Washington State Pass $10.00 day or $30.00 for the year). For best experience, try the kayak tour and you won't be disappointed.

on oneside when you get to the very tip of the spit, the water is freezing! and on the other side, it's nearly bath water! was alot of fun. saw some cool jelly fish too. :)

An amazing State Park...unpopulated with a variety of paths through the woods and on the beach. Incredibly beautiful camping spots both on the beach and in the main campground. Only about 3 miles from the main village.

We go to Spencer Spit State Park almost every year - I think we've been every year except one in the last ten years. We typically car camp, with bikes, which is great fun. This year, we boated there (launching in Deception Pass) and camped in the "walk-in" sites. There are mooring buoys for boats. (first come first serve on the buoys, but campground sites require a reservation.) Lopez Village is a quick drive or bike ride away (or 4 mile nice walk). It's cute, and small. There is a fun farmers' market every Saturday in the summer. On 4th of July, there are fireworks from Fisherman's Bay, which we saw, and were great. Walking to the end of the spit is always fun as well as exploring the spit/beach, kayaking from the beach, stand-up paddleboarding, etc. If you kayak out the the island (can't remember the name) right off from the tip of the spit at low tide, you'll be rewarded with lots of views of purple and orange starfish. We saw a bright red jellyfish this time, and we have seen dolphins. You'll always see bald eagles, great blue herons, and ospreys as well. If you do a little hike at Shark's Reef, you'll be rewarded with a view of sea lions lying in the sun on the rocks below. It's a wonderful spot for family camping. Enjoy!
