I took my daughter on our first real fishing trip and we were on the Playboy 2 boat.. The captain and the deck had were amazing... Our boat was full 16 fisherman and our captain took us out about 2 hours from shore and the fish went crazy!!! Not even 30 seconds after the captain had us drop line the fish started biting and didn't stop for 2 hours!!! We had so much fun with this crew we will be back next year and every year after.... We now have the fishing bug:)
This Boat with captain Eric, continues to provide an excellent Salmon fishing trip, our outing in August was perfect..19 guests and 2 crew had limit of 42 Salmon and back at dock by 11:30 am. we look forward to another trip soon.
First off, Deep Sea Charters as a booking agency for the Skippers is awesome. I have used them for 4 trips this season, two Friday/Saturday outings with my camping buddies and lastly, because I had such a good time, I scheduled a Saturday out with my Daughters on the Slammer with Skipper Rhett. The first trip out was for Salmon on the Spindrift with skipper Tommy. This being my first trip out in over 10 years, I was a little rusty on what to expect. Friends made me get up and we were on the boat before there was light. Deckhand was running after tackle and soon returned and we all loaded. Long story short here, we got the brief here is what's up. Same when we started fishing, "Lines out, drop them to 100, that's about 50 pulls". We had 8 people in our group, but some yacko's had gotten there early and claimed spots that prevented us from being together. Worst thing was they sucked at fishing and kept tangling with us. So, I headed to the bow.Day ended well with the boat limiting, but I baited my own hook most of the day. so lets move on to Saturday 5th.On Saturday we went out for a bottom fishing trip, Sea Bass then Link Cod on The Slammer with Rhett. Now Rhett and the Slammer might fair well with others at Salmon fishing, but The Slammer SLAMS them in the rocks. Rhett took us to get the Sea Bass first, and that took us a couple hours, then we went and caught small flounders to use for bait. How awesome is this I said to my friend Chance, this is actually three trips in one. Then we hit the Link Cod where everyone but me was pulling them in as fast as they could. It kind of reminded me of one of the old Tuna fishing black and white movies. There were fish all around my feet and again I was baiting my own hook. But this time it was because everyone was slammed. Finally it was my turn to catch, and catch I did. I ended up with the catch of the day at 30lbs and 2oz. So, I left that weekend all happy and eager to return one day. That's when my daughter wanted to come visit after taking her MCAT test. I thought what a great time to take her 23 and her little sister 7 out on a deep sea fishing trip. So, I booked it. All was great with Deep Sea Charters. My friend Chance, had also booked and invited me for Friday, on a special 12 man day on the Blue Eyes.Seeing we are getting long in the tooth here, I will cut the review down a bit. Rick and the deckhand on the Blue Eyes are alright. At first I was set back a little, but after getting a chance to work and talk with Rick, everything was fine and everyone had a great day as we limited the boat.Last day with the girls was the best, as I mentioned before Rhett and Donald are the BEST on the Slammer. First off Brett gives his normal coffee there, life jackets there, etc...But when we get to the fish, you better listen to him as the man knows how to fish. Rhett does not just drive the boat and get you on the fish, he tells you how he catches them. He came out and demonstrated how to work your tackle for each type of fish and circumstances. Like when the boat started drifting he told us how we could let the line out faster and no longer get leader wrap. I had a great time on all the boats, but for new comers or once a year people, I would highly recommend the Slammer.
On Aug 4, 2014 went out on BLUE EYES with Capt. Rick at the helm. Inshore the sea state was 2-4 but fishing reports were not good prospects for salmon. Capt. Rick headed out West for better prospect to 25 miles. Sea state had picked up and was rough for the un-initiated. We had 19 fishers onboard with about 1/3 not quite up to the task in the heavy troughs. Fishing was on with many wilds caught and released expediately by Ryan our expert deck hand. We kept the lad running. Several of us caught our limit of silvers and I think everyone eventially was able to land a decent sized salmon for the trip. It would of been nice to have stayed longer in one or two or the four stops we made but I'm sure those who were not feeling well appreciated the move to calmer waters.Definitely dress in layers, wear deck gripping foot wear and be ready for sudden swells with one hand for yourself and one on the pole.Having fished for many years I still learned some techniques to make the trip noteworthy. Skipper Rick does a great job getting hooks in front of fish even though he is a former ground pounder. Great day at sea even with the un-seasonable 4-5 sea state for part of that day. I would gladly jump onboard for another seascape adventure.Retired SCPO, USN
Yesterday my mom and I went out on the Blue Eyes, and came back with our limit of salmon. Seas were a little rough, and I might suggest a few more grab bars mounted on the boat for folks to get where they need to be. The skipper and deck hand took good care of us and were both friendly and courteous--even giving us a few extra fishing tips. I would go out on another Deep Sea charter in Westport if I want to go fishing again. Oh yeah, and it was the cleanest head I think I've ever seen or smelled on a charter boat.
Had a great day on Saturday 6/28/14. Playboy too did a great job for us that day. We will be happy to go out again with this skipper and deck hand. We did only one long drift but were on the fish all morning long. Worry is too many Kings and not enough silvers but still got limits. Fancy motels in town wierd. Will use older style motels next time. Fancy motels not worth the money. And after Red Apple market in town has gone out of business, other businesses in town could get thier heads out of thier butts and find some social skills. When people are in your store spending money be nice to them or we wont be back. Get it we can buy enough stuff out of town before we come down to your town. And yes if the old lady behind the counter had talked to me the way she talked to the younger person ahead of me, I would have left the items on the counter and walked away too. And that young person did his time in Iraq can you say that.
I could not be more pleased with my experience on the the playboy too, the capt was great, and he got us right on the fish, the deckhand nick was so helpful and worked his butt off for us, and we were a handful to say the least, we already plan to come back and we will be boarding the playboy too
Day was going well and I was enjoying it. Only caught one lingcod but it had to be gaffed and netted to be brought in. So the trip ends and I see my number 5 on the smallest lingcod I'm the boat! Probably weighed 2lbs when mine easily weighed 15lbs! I immediately questioned it and was told not to complain about my small fish! What the hell? I will NEVER use deep sea charters again. This was on the boat Ultimate.
Went out for a 2 day trip on the Fury. To make it quick all I will list are the good and bad highlights of the trip, you can decide the value yourself.1. experienced captain who truly tried hard to catch tuna however after two days of fishing with 10 people on board we landed less than 90 fish. I think the main reason was our bait died the first day which left us nothing to use on the second day.2. Mike has very little patience for his customers. He hollered on two different occasions at my Dad. I don't think Mike ever figured out that after 40 years working the construction industry my Dad cant hear.3. Bait boys worked their rear ends off and were a lot of fun to have around. I was surprised they did as well as the did after spending two days sleeping on the floor in the middle of the kitchen. The captains comments were, don't worry if you step on them, their used to it.4. The boat claims to sleep 10 however there are only 9 beds for paying customers. If you don't get there early your options are on the floor or out on the fishing deck bench. The bunks down below are a borderline death trap. Myself and a few others woke up several time during the night due to a lack of air. There is no air moving below which allows low oxygen pockets to form, hello captain Mike and Deep Sea Charters, purchase a $10 fan for your boat!5. At the end of the trip our fish was filleted and bagged. It was then left in the sun for the remaining two hours we had to go heading back to the dock. When we arrived back home we found we were lacking the agreed fish count each person was supposed to receive by 32 fillets. 6. Almost forgot, bring your own toilet paper, they ran out.My last comment is generated by a fisherman I spoke to while I was loading my fish. This fisherman told me they just got off another boat on a 2 day trip with 8 people on board where they landed over 200 fish, there bait was plenty and the remainder was still swimming in the tank.
My husband went last year with Deep Sea Charters and had a great time. This year I went a long with 2 of our daughters. We all caught our limit and had a blast. Captain Eric of "The Playboy II" and first mate Joel were great fun and very helpful. It was my first salmon and he was a fighter but I won. We were very pleased with Deep Sea Charters both times we used them.
Let me tell you about a trip we took on the 4th of July. We wanted to go out with mike on the fury but they changed his boat from salmon to bottom fish so they put us on the tequila too. No big deal we have been out with ken about 10 times before even though he acts like he doesn't know us. WHAT A MISTAKE He gave his little speech before we left and told us we where trolling ( mind you15 people) and we where suppose to not touch our poles cuz fish can feel the vibration if your holding your pole and if you get a bite you have to let your pole bend into a horseshoe before you can grab it. SERIOUSLY Out there for 10 hours with nothing happening. One person on each side was getting a few bites and one person caught 2 fish and the other person on the other side caught one but a lot of the 15 people didn't even see a bite including me. My wife got a bite but the pole never bent to a horseshoe.I thought the captain was your guide and if something isn't working you try something else and if that doesn't work you try something else. At least when I take my boat out that's what I do. But according to ken ( the captain) it was my fault for not telling him to do something else. FOR REALThan if you complain to deep seas charters they just give your complaint to the captain so he can get pissed at you and trash you all over the Internet. Than deep seas says sorry we are not responsible. We are just the booking agent. Sorry but deep seas is the one who took my money and booked me on the boat. I think that ken is proble burnt out but how is that my fault. My wife and I go out on charters about 4-6 times a year for the last 10 years and deep seas will no longer see a Pennie from me. When I told ken I didn't like the things he was saying about me cuz he changed the subject to I was mad that I got skunked when the subject was about why we didn't drift when trolling wasn't working ken said to me like some 5 year old " you threw the first stone" grow up ken you piece of crap. WHATEVER HAPPENS DON'T USE DEEP SEAS CHARTERS
All of the people at Deep Sea Charters were very professional and very accommodating! Had a great day . The captain of The Ultimate worked very hard to keep us on the fish all day!! His crew was excellent! Thank you all!
Stay away from Deep Sea Charters in Westport WA!!I am an outdoor enthusiast and have taken deep sea charters from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, Maui to Maine. This trip BY FAR was the WORST experience ever!! The Blue Eyes captain was non communicative and seemed irritated that we even arrived for our trip. We boarded his boat and tried to talk to him and ask questions regarding the area, the type of fishing, and lastly the boat log sheet and received no response. When he did talk all he could do was complain about a previous trip and how the Coast Guard had boarded his boat during rough seas and accidently broke out a window. He barely took the time to go over general boat safety and never mentioned where the life vests were located and did not even have enough for our party of 15. We booked this trip over a month in advance and you would think with a party that large they would have two deck hands to handle both sides of the boat. WRONG again. On the way out all the Captain Rick Schmidt could talk about is getting back in before the bar was impassable because he didn’t want to stay out past 6pm like another boat had to do the day before. Keep in mind that when asked how far we were going out he said about 3 hours out. This was supposed to be an all day trip of 8 hours. That left only 2 hours to fish Hm convenient for him. Needless to say we did not even get our 8 hours we were back in by 1:30pm. Needless to say we did not end up going out 3 hours but about 1.5 hours and set anchor. Once the anchor was set I expected to be given some direction by the deck hand on how to fish for bottom fish in this area and what to do if we caught something. i.e. wait for him or go ahead and pull up on board. Again we GOT NO COMMUNICATION. This yielded only a few fish and so we set off to another spot and he drug the anchor for over 20 minutes. In all other places this is illegal and can land you in big trouble tearing up the Ocean floor like that. He then proceeded to stop and we thought he was pulling up the anchor but NOPE he started off again and continued to drag the anchor for another 20 minutes again. I found this absolutely absurd. Anyone wanting to go bottom fishing beware of Deep Sea Charters and definitely the boat Blue Eyes grumpy, lazy crew that has no social skills in a business that not only requires it but is a must! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE
I was on two trips over the weekend, one for rockfish/bottomish and the other for halibut, on the Fury with skipper Mike Harris. I am convinced that Harris has fishing ESP. On the first day, I could hear over the radio that all of the boats were having a hard time finding many sea bass but Harris kept trying different places until he landed us on a great spot and we all returned with our limits. I'd never been halibut fishing before and didn't realize how tired my arms would get reeling one in, but the captain and crew were right there to make sure my fish got in the boat. Again, each of us returned with our limit, catching a few ling cod on the way back, too. Along with the main deckhand, Harris has a trainee deckhand, Caleb, who should be renamed "Mr. Personality." Surprisingly, I knew one of the other fishermen from when I'd ridden the school bus (in the early seventies!) and many of the others lived near me. This familiarity, combined with the extremely entertaining personalities of the fishermen and deckhands and the great fishing made for one of the most extraordinary trips I've ever been on. And I almost forgot to mention the dolphins and whales that swam around the boat while we were halibut fishing! It was a great day. I'll be fishing on the Fury again!
