Offering a lovely setting on a bluff above the water, this historic house is an absolute gem. It isn't an ostentatious mansion, but rather a relatively modest, beautifully crafted home - a real family home, built in 1868. I learned a lot about the Rothschild family, including one of their daughters, who adored her pet parrot and kitties. Look for parrot beak bites on the original dining-room chairs! I even found a picture of the daughter in the nearby Jefferson Museum - also worth a visit. By the way, if your timing is right, you just might spot a deer or two grazing on the Rothshild's lawn.
this small sleepy Victorian town, has some great shopping, along with these "wonderful old mansions. you'll need a couple of days to really see this place. i plan to return soon. BTW, the shopping is so inexpensive, you'll be stunned at the prices. good place to do your holiday shopping ..
This historic house is very interesting and well worth a visit. Take the time to read all of the letters, picture explanations, and historical documents. There is someone present to answer questions.
If you visit Port Townsend you should visit the house. Ourhostess was knowledgeable and gave us a lot of good information not only about the house but about PortTownsend.
Great view. Sweet tour guide gave wonderful insights and made history come alive. Clothing photos furniture family life. Close to center of town and part of museum package ticket with other museums.
Wonderful docent that shared great details on the family and the times. Great opportunity to see closely the home and possessions. Spectacular view of the wharf from the front porch.
This was a very well-priced tour. Our guide gave us a nice rundown about what was authentic and what had been restored. She knew a lot about the Rothschilds, a very prominent family in Port Townsend, as well as the architect of this modest house.
While this house was built in 1868, it's preserved much as it was in the early 1900's. Our guide gave us a great intro of the history of the family and the house, then let us wander through the building on our own. Allow about one hour. This attraction is seasonal, so check out their website at www.jchsmuseum.org.Check for discounted admission when you plan to visit the Rothschild House, Worden State Park, and the Port Townsend Historical Society.
This is the only home, in a town full of victorian era homes, that has been preserved nearly as it was lived in 100 years ago. If you are interested in history, make sure you visit the Rothschild's house. The home sits at the top of the bluff overlooking Port Townsend and bay. It was built in 1868 by local merchant D.C.H. Rothschild. His family owned and lived in the home until 1954 when Emilie Rothschild, daughter of the builder, passed away. There were few changes made to the home over the 86 years the Rothschilds' lived there. The only major renovation occured in 1914 when Rothschild's widow finally agreed to have a bathroom installed in the home, replacing the outhouse. Still, the home has never had hot running water. The home is filled with every day items needed to run a home in the late 19th century and gives us a glimpse into that era's middle class life.
