Great walk from downtown Vancouver to the Columbia river to the Old Apple tree then via the land bridge to the Fort.
It's not just a bridge, it's a history lesson and an art lesson and a garden to be viewed as you walk along this bridge. What a nice pleasant surprise.
The whole walk around the Columbia River area, Ft. Vancouver and the area is easy and relaxing. Budget 2/3 hours.
Very cool bridge that you can walk over. Stop and see the exhibit and learn about native Indians in the pacific northwest tribes. Learn something new. Take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Stop by the 100 year old apple tree park along the way in the fall and get some apple cider.
My family usually take this path after were done hanging out at the Colombia River (beach); just adjacent to this walk path. You'll enter by going through a tunnel(train rail) and you'll see a very old apple tree, the path would be on the right(you won't miss it). We usually walk and stop every scenic point and the kids would (jog, run - their quite active). The path takes you to Fort Vancouver Historic Sight. I love coming back here when I get the chance!!! I highly recommend visitors to stop by and have their own experience.
The landbridge is feature on RoadTrippers.com. It incorporates local fauna as well as history signs that include the time before the white-man through present day.The landbridge is a 15 minute stroll from Fort Vancouver and 20 minutes from the historical Pearson Airfield and used by both pedestrians and bikers. On the south side of the bridge along the Columbia River is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants since 1987, Who Song and Larry's, and the ubiquitous Joe's Crab Shack.
We walked from river walk across to Ft. Vancouver. Very pretty walk over the interstate, with lots of trees and interpretive signs. Beautiful views.
The walk offers education on the history of the area, as well as on the flora along the walk. Backdrop of Mount Hood and Columbia River..just gorgeous!
The Vancouver Land Bridge - as you drive down Hwy 14 (either direction) you would never realize the overpass with trees on it is anything special... well it is! Closest and easiest way to reach the land bridge is to park in the public lot on SE Columbia Way across from the entrance to the Old Apple Tree Park and Vancouver Land Bridge. A short walk through a tunnel under the railroad tracks and you are now in the beautiful Old Apple Tree Park (where you'll find the oldest apple tree in the territory). From the park you can enter the bridge. The bridge is fun and easy to walk (slight incline as it rises one hundred feet from the park to the top where it crosses Hwy 14). There are areas to stop and rest as you go if you need a break. Lots of plants along the sides makes it an inviting oasis above a freeway! During our visit - the Humane Society'5k walk/run with dogs was going on... so we not only got to enjoy the bridge and park, we got to see lots of dogs and their owners. We had a great time.
This is a nice connector between the river walk adjacent to the Columbia River and the Fort Vancouver area. It has interpretive signs about the history of the area and good views of the river, Fort Vancouver, Pearson Air Park, and Mount Hood on a clear day. Nice to have a safe and scenic way to get across a very busy highway.
This is a bit of a strange bridge because of location. It goes from a parking lot over a interstate highway to an old apple tree. The tree is thought to be the oldest living apple tree in the Northwest and looks it. one can walk further down a trail to the Fort Vancouver Historical site but they have a more convenient parking lot in the front of it. So why the high rating and why even it's existence? Well it's because it was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and designed by the same gal who designed the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC. It is a beautiful sweeping bridge with lots of interesting curves and a bit of history plaques and pictures embedded in it. It's controversial because of it's location and because it cost a reported fourteen million dollars. But I look at it as a functional work of sculpture and thus the four star rating. Art is in the eye of the beholder and tax payer.
Well here I was happy to take my kiddos for a walk on this nice long looking bridge !! And to have it be a big disappointment it was nothing like the picture shown blah blah big let down
The pedestrian land bridge is innovative, beautiful and functional. I wish every city had the foresight to build these bridges.
Don't you just love it when the government builds something that goes way beyond being functional and borders on insane? The Vancouver Land Bridge is just that place! How many millions upon millions of dollars went into building a curved pedesitrian bridge that took unconventional engineering methods and effort to build? Could not that money been better used to build lets say a 100 acre park with trees and botanical gardens, bike paths and walking trails? No way, Vancouver wanted the best looking land bridge that connects into a somewhat desolate Fort Vancouver Park and the trail that borders the Columbia river. Of course, this bridge has some shrubs and trees on it also! I recommend seeing this bridge first hand to see your hard earned tax dollars at work folks. Your going to shake your head in disbelief just as I did. It is Amazing!!!
Walk over land bridge and see the Old Apple Tree - it's in bad shape but the city is trying to save it. Nice walk from Fort Vancouver.
