Stopped to play this course with a group of guys. The course is a beautiful track cut out of a state forest. The price is a bargain at $20. The greens are in need of help but it is still s fun time.
If you like golf and scenery you must play Cheraw State Park if in the area. The course is in a state park, no homes, plenty of wildlife and scenery. The management could not be more friendly. We play this every time we are in the area.
My wife and I recently enjoyed a wonderful weekend camping at Cheraw State Park. The campground itself is very small (which is an added bonus). All sites have electric and water hookup. The bathhouse was spotless and offered a very nice hot shower and restroom. A special little touch that I really enjoyed was that there was a porch swing type swing right next to our campsite which I particularly enjoyed in the evening. The campground was was very clean and really quiet and peaceful. Across the lake from the campground is the day use area. The swimming beach was very clean and offered a relaxing way to enjoy a hot summer day. The picnic area was well maintained with several shelters and more of the porch swing to enjoy. We stopped by the ranger station to check in. The park rangers were really friendly and helpful. Not only did they give us several great suggestions of things to do they also loaned us fishing equipment free of charge. We didn't golf so I don't have first hand knowledge of the course, but I will say that from what I saw it was very well maintained and exceptionally pretty. An incredible value considering camping only cost $18 a night with full hookups.
My son and I had chance to golf this course on his last visit here and I must say for a public course it is in excellent condition, except for the sand traps. The course layout takes you through the forest and if you have a chance to play it in the fall the colors are outstanding. This course is highly recommended.
Cheraw is a one of kind golf course. Cut into a pine forest with wide fairways and beautiful lakes. The greens had problems last year 2013 but this year things were much better. Love to play this course because it is challenging and a lot of fun. It is truly a one of a kind golf course. I have been playing it for the past twenty years and enjoy it every year.
The turkey oak trail was in terrible condition, mostly rutted 2 track for maintenance vehicles that was barely walkable and in a location that appears to be a token after thought. The half mile boardwalk along Lake Juniper is nice and a trail around the lake would be much more desirable. The lake is beautiful. Most of the resources and effort are put into the golf course.
Not sure why there isn't a separate TA listing for the campground and park. We are not golfers, we are campers, and we love this little campground. It's a beautiful state park with a very well maintained 16 site campground, with nice gravel sites, a very clean bathhouse and lovely views of the lake from several sites. The lake is a few miles long so it's great for kayaking and canoeing, and they offer boats for rent ( we have our own and love being able to launch from our favorite campsite. The park also has a nice beach and swimming area across the lake from the campgound with a volleyball court, playground equipment and even a cornhole game set up. All the rangers have been helpful and friendly. Although we don't golf, the course looks well maintained, the greens appeared lush and there were plenty of folks on the course this weekend.Probably our favorite thing is the moonlight paddle that they do about once a month in Spring thru Fall. A ranger leads the boats into the cypress grove as night falls and then you paddle back in the dark, hopefully with a nice moon lighting the way. We've done that both times we've camped here.
Unfortunately this golf course has deteriorated over the past couple of years as there is lack of funding from the state. The greens were terrible and the overall condition was not the best.
The state park has an excellent 18 hole course. Every hole is framed with large pine trees. There is some strategic water holes as well. the 13th is a very difficult par 4 with a testy second shot to a water protected green (or a lay up to about 100 yards). The course has some maintenance issues probably due to budget cuts, but it is a delight to play and is very reasonable. I would play this course any chance I get. There is no park entrance fee. They do have cabins available though we did not stay there.
What a beautiful State Park! Wonderful wildlife! We rented a cute cabin there in the park...my kind of camping! It was freezing outside but warm on the inside and we had the best time playing Bird Bingo which came with the cabin rental. Great family time with the kids and comfy pull outs! Visit the Hardware store in Cheraw to meet some great town folk who love to share the fascinating history of Cheraw including Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Slave Market history. Home of jazz great Dizzy Gilespie too! Run, don't walk....better yet HIKE In Cheraw State Park with your kids and spouse!
Course always in great condition. Usually see a deer, sometimes beavers, beautiful lake views in a beautiful park setting.
Me and coworkers went for a walk. It was quiet and well kept. It made me feel like I was on the set of a movie because I am not use to the country scenary. We did not engage in any park activities but we did notice a nice golf course, campground site and a huge lake with a diving platform.
Not a golfer, but this state park is awesome! Beautiful lake, which you can rent canoes or kayaks for. Also a very nice camp ground and cute cabins you can also stay in. Since we are local, we go here often for picnics. The new park ranger just put alot into new play ground equipment for the kids. Also many trails and hikes you can take. A nice board walk around the lake on one of the trails. One of the many things Cheraw can be proud of!
Usually kept in great shape, is player friendly with wide fairways and large greens.
Stayed in cabin #2 this spring and it was a real nice stay for our family. Kayaked on the lake on early Saturday morning and rode bicycles on paved roads. Cabins aren't cheap and they are basic but they are a good choice for families with kids.
