As one of the few attractions open on Monday, in December, I visited here as an accommodation to the wife. I am not normally a "flower" kind of guy. But I must admit I was impressed. The facility was huge, numbering 19 greenhouses in all with a central office where administrative and shipping duties are performed. We met the owner, Max, a second generation owner, who took time out to show us around and explain the history of the propertyand the international nature of his enterprise. Many of his live flowers were shipped around the world. The weather is checked along the transit route and heat packs are included in the packaging. I now even know how heat packs work based on the properties of rusting metal. Who knew? We were also able to chat with several employees, (and the resident parrot who adds to the tropical atmosphere) as they went about their duties. It was cool to get a view into the inner workings of a small business. We purchased an orchid plant and pot to grace our kitchen windowsill and are anxiously awaiting it's bloom.
It's OK about the seedlings if you don't mind waiting for 3-4 years for the orchids to bloom. C and H has 10 green houses but a limited supply of "blooming size" orchids. They do have exotics which can be fun to grow. Their prices are very competitive to other wholesale orchid growers. I ended up buying eight at a cost of $130, three of which where in spike and one in bloom.
I have been visiting this nursery for years.Carter & Holmes used to be the best place to purchase orchids. The last two trips there were disappointing. Inventory has been reduced significantly, and the plants that were available were not cared for as they have been in the past. Prices are not competitive with other quality orchid vendors.
We were visiting the Newberry area and was told to stop in the nursery. What a beautiful huge facility. Gorgeous orchids and many other kinds of plants with very knowledgeable accessible staff. Employees were very friendly and ready to answer all questions and make recommendations for novice gardeners. Prices were reasonable and there was a vast display of flowers and shrubs. Very impressive facility.
Found a reference to Carter & Holmes in our hotel room and asked directions as it is well out of town on a back road. What a find...ended up buying quite a few orchids which the friendly staff assured us they would not ship till we got home from Fla (we're from the cold part of the NE). Great prices and service. We were the only customers and got the royal tour (along with the royal treatment).
I have done well with everything I got from them. They have everything you at reasonable prices I think. I am Honor to live this close to them. And everyone there is nice and helpful with everything. I would love to go to an Open house there. I will have to check out when that is.
Open House is the time to go. They have it four times a year. I went for the Aug one. Plants are at a discount. A well worth it afternoon. Free lunch and free workshop, now I just have to get my orchids to bloom.
My husband and I spent a most enjoyable afternoon visiting the Carter and Holmes Orchid Nursery greenhouses. Many of the greenhouses are open for guest to freely walk through at one’s leisure. No backpacks, bags or large pocketbooks are allowed in the greenhouses as guest tend to hit the orchids during the tour. Max Holmes, the son of the original founder, gave a most informative workshop on the care of orchids. The staff is very friendly and very knowledge about all aspects of growing orchids. This was a most pleasurable afternoon. If you like orchids, this is the place for you!
My wife and I went here after spending a day in Newberry and it was the perfect way to cap our day in the city. She really loves flowers and knows a good bit about them for an amateur. You can tour about 3 or 4 greenhouses and purchase just about any plant or flower you see. The facility is less than 5 miles away from town and if you are a flower person it's worth about an hour of your time. This place grows a lot of their own varieties of Orchids and cross-breeds, and some of the colors that resulting were just breathtaking considering they are from nature. You definitely want to spend at least an hour here!
What a fabulous place. You really have the run of the green houses and can walk through any green house that is not locked. The staff working in the green houses are very friendly and will share with you everything you want to know. The varity of orchids are mind blowing. I have never grown orchids before but did buy a few different varities and the staff was great helping me decide how to take care of them and what should be purchased with them. They did not try to push products and ensured that I knew they would ship anywhere. They also told us to call if we needed help. Wonderful place for anyone that likes flowers and plants. Recommend leaving everything but your camera in the car as the rows are narrow with all the plants.
I was stunned by the 15 or so greenhouses, the brilliance of the plants, and the friendly employees. We came, accidently, during one of their 4 times a year open houses and were offered a free lunch that was delightful. Brought home one orchid that's about to bloom and two others that are flourishing. Very cool place.
We enjoyed our visit and tour or Carter and Holmes. We were very pleased to have Mr. Holmes gives us our tour. I learned a lot about orchids and had no idea there are so many varieties. There was a $5.00 charge for the tour, but you were given a voucher that was worth $5.00 at the end of the tour to buy a plant. I would not recommend this tour for those that have balance problems as there are steps and pipes you need to maneuver through as you go through the greenhouses.
everykind of orkid you can think of in every color know to man... My friend from up notrth really enjoyed the experience and went home with a car loaded full of plants. This is a great experience and their is no pressure to purchase plants.
If you've ever wanted to grow an orchid, you must see this place. Hard to describe but many rows of buildings, all housing orchids of every variety. Buying small plants here is much cheaper than buying one orchid at Lowe's or a florist. It's worth the trip!
