We’ve visited the Newberry Opera House many times, most recently to see “Buddy,” the high-energy celebration of Buddy Holly’s life and music, and the Marvin Hamlisch musical review “One Singular Sensation.” We enjoyed these and all the other performances we’ve attended at the NOH. We also love the historic building itself, which is gorgeous inside and out and has a cozy, intimate feel (just 400 seats). As a bonus, we get to enjoy Newberry, which has one of the nicest downtowns of any small town in the region. Because the NOH is renowned as one of the best small venues in America, and artists of all kinds just love to perform there, Exec. Director Debra Smith is able to book a lot of talent at surprisingly favorable rates. I never cease to be amazed at the diversity and quality of the talent showcased at the Newberry Opera House. Incidentally, it’s not precisely true that there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Seats in the narrow balcony sections running high along the sides of the theatre are problematic because the railing can partially obscure the view for shorter people. If you order balcony seats, it’s best to get them in the large section directly facing the stage. (I don’t like the first row in that section because the seating is pretty tight to the front railing.) If anybody in your party has trouble with stairs, you’ll definitely want to take the elevator.

Excellent sound, loved the Mary Chapin Carpenter concert, great venue. The staff/volunteers seating concert goers, directing traffic at intermission and at the end of the concert could have been friendlier- smiled-etc. However, they are of an older age group by and large and were there to assist just because.
