You're not going to make a day of it, but an interesting piece of local history. Especially convenient to check out during the farmer's market.
Hub City Museum is a marvelous learning experience. The young man we had as a guide was very knowledgeable and very personable. Older group of adults is what our party consisted of.
The place is filled with old train material and information. It is very interesting to stroll through the place and see the train memories.
This museum is good for adults but did not keep my children's attention very long. I enjoyed the exhibits and reading about the rails. The caboose is neat and my children enjoyed it. Most of the indoor museum was just a little too dry for my kids.
This is a very small museum featuring the history of the many railroads that served and still serve Spartanburg. It is located at an Amtrak station. The staff is very helpful and you can tell that they love railroads. If you stay long enough you will be able to see some trains as they pass by the station and the engineer will wave to you. Be sure to check the hours when they are open.
It's a cute little museum in a wonderful location. They actually have a small farmers market right outside their door and have awesome fruits and veggies to purchase while you're visiting.
This was a neat little museum to stumble upon and learn more about the history of Spartanburg. We actually heard about it from the staff at Comfort Suites when we asked about some historical things we could do in town. Enjoyed!
This museum is in the Spartanburg train station, near downtown and just a few miles off I-85. It has a few rooms of very informative memorabilia, mostly from the Southern Railway but also from the other railroads that served Spartanburg. There are also a few model train displays and a gift shop. The staff is very, very friendly and will gladly walk you around the museum and tell you about the area's railroad history. It should be expanding soon.
Tiny museum but only open 3 yrs so will prob expand. People could not be nicer. Brilliant for young kids (approx 3-5). Model train in the restored carraige for kids to play with. Free admission to both museum and carraige. Great way to pass 45 mins or so.
One of the enjoyable things we did on our recent "road trip" when we stayed in Spartanburg; got to see the museum and do a little "railfanning" right outside!
I've been to a lot of much better railroad museums, Although these people try hard, they are way too underfunded to do it right.
We took the grandchildren, but enjoyed it as much as they did. What a little treasure and the most knowledgable people who love to talk about trains.
My favorite place is the parking lot! Each Saturday they have a Farmer's Market! It's a great thing for Spartanburg!!
It is always a joy to listen to a docent with a passion for sharing information. We were the lucky folks who listened to the importance of the railroads for Spartanburg. The museum is just a couple of rooms jammed full of railroad memorabilia. The museum does an excellent job of showing the importance of the railroad in Spartanburg for the peach and cotton industries.Kids seemed to enjoy the operating telegraph key which is connected to a receiving key across the room. The docent had enthusiasm for railroads and enjoyed sharing that with kids. There is a grassy area outside the station and the farmer's market is located there on Saturdays. So, it is a great stop for a family with kids.
The museum isn't too big, but the history is good. On weekends in the summer they use the premisses for the Farmer's Market.
