Thanks so much for taking the time to visit us! Yes, we change our exhibit space up to 16 times a year so there is sure to be something new and interesting the next time you stop by. See you soon!
Thank you for visiting the DPM! Our mission is to communicate and preserve the stories of the inhabitants of the Dakota Prairie, both past and present. I hope you will visit again soon to see what we exhibit next. Thanks again!
Thank you Larry, we love history, too! The railroads played a huge part in Aberdeen becoming the "Hub City" of Brown County. Thanks for visiting us while in Aberdeen. Hope to see you again in the future.
It's not a big museum with a lot to offer, but there are nice displays inside. We were there for a special event during the Christmas season, but my children enjoyed the regular displays while waiting to participate in the planned activities. The people there do a good job with the space and the funds they have to work with. It was a good experience for my family and we will go back again.
Loved looking at history of Aberdeen. Great brochures on Downtown History. Wish I had had more time to take walking tours.
I learn something new and intersting every single time I visit! I take my children here and the staff are always friendly! The exhibits are always well thought out and very detailed! Great place to visit and its free-can't beat that!
I think this is a great museum. You can always go more than once and still want to stay awhile because the exhibits are always changing. There is a kid exhibit as well with toys and costumes. I recommend to all.
This is a historical building in downtown Aberdeen. There is no fee for admission and there are a variety of exhibits that remain as well as traveling exhibits- ex: children's themed. For young kids, there is about an hour of things to hold their attention. For school aged and older, a person could stay longer to look at the historical items. There is an elevator inside for those unable to take the stairs.
The museum isn't large, but given the size of Aberdeen, we were pleasantly surprised. A nice variety of exhibits and enough to entertain adults and kids for 1-2 hours.
Built in 1888 as the Northwestern National Bank, this three story Romanesque Revival style building now houses the Dacotah Prairie Museum and judging by the pictures, looks just exactly the same as it once did! There are many kinds of exhibits here to interest just about anyone. I especially enjoyed the Dakota Central Telephone Company and Western Union exhibits and the Hatterscheidt Wildlife Gallery that features over 55 mounted animals from North America, Africa and India.I also enjoyed their "Rails Across the Prairie" exhibit which explained that Aberdeen got its nickname, "The Hub City" because there were so many different railroad lines that converged here. They also have a nice selection of books on the area in their gift store. I paid only $5.00 for a nice hardcover history of Brown County, South Dakota.Admission is free, but you can give a donation to help support operations.
