Brookings- I love you! Your love of art and culture is a hidden gem in the enormity of the plains! Stunning artists! Great for all.
Harvey Dunn is the most well known painter/illustrator from SD. Currently they are showing all of the works they own - around 116. It's a real opportunity to see the breadth of his work. He's most well known for his prairie, frontier scenes, but he has many types of styles. The museum also has several temporary exhibits on display at any point in time, often SD or Midwest artists. Definitely worth a stop. Also the gift shop is wonderful - great jewelry & book selections & much more.
This lovely building houses much beautiful and varied, art. and has no charge admittance. also has a lovely gift shop . they change displays often and have a permanent display of Harvey Dunne art that shows much of what the early plains days were llike.
A fine collection of local and regional art with ever changing exhibits. This art museum has a friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere.
We quite enjoyed the exhibits. And we liked that we were able to see all of them in an hour or so (within the kids' attention span). The gift shop has a very interesting selection of books and of art or related items.
This is a hidden gem that doesn't get much publicity. It is home to artists Harvey Dunn and Oscar Howe as well as The largest collection of Maraghab Linens. Many people have never heard of Maraghab Linens which are no longer made. It is definitely worth viewing if you are interested in detailed needle work, now almost a lost art. The museum is free and located on the University Campus
This small museum has a fabulous collection of Harvey Dunn paintings as well as Margab linens, Paul Goble illustrations and galleries for temporary exhibits. They offer a variety of classes for the public, such as beading, fabric dying and painting. The Museum store is one of the best with a huge selection of items at great prices. This is the best place in the area for finding unique gifts.
We enjoyed viewing the paintings and other art. A good selection of artists and descriptions about each piece.
Pros: A nice small collection with great variety of art styles. The woman who ran the shop was very friendly and helpful. Lots of neat stuff in the gift shop.Cons: Parking requires a pass that you must get at the museum, then walk back to your car to put in the window.Note: Located on the South Dakota State University Campus.
