The trip through the reservation is beautiful, rolling prairie land as far as the eye can see. The government's way of treating our native American's is so unforgivable, as anyone who has spent any time on a reservation can attest. The casino was nice, although I really wish they'd ban smoking inside. The restrooms were SUPER clean! The breakfast special was well prepared and served quickly and with several smiles. You can tell that the workers take pride in what they do, regardless of the job. The gas and the breakfast were both really good deals, and we will stop here again when we pass through the area.
My Father was born here, and I am a member of the tribe. Its always a bittersweet journey to return to Rosebud because of the challenging conditions of the people who live on the rez. Its a beautiful part of the country, and I would encourage anyone to come and visit and spend time driving around and enjoying this peaceful part of South Dakota. There are grocery stores and gas stations in most of the communities, but it is very remote. Only a few places on the reservation to stay, and the casino hotel on the border with Nebraska is not exactly where Id want to take my children. Opt to stay in Valentine, NE, 25 miles North, or Rapid City and commute, about 2.5 hours away.
The Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, home to the Sicangu Lakoka people, is a place that is both wonderfully magic and sadly tragic. The magic is in the warmth and kindness of the people, the smell of prairie grasses, the beautiful sunsets, and the beat of drums at summer powwows. The tragedy is in the poverty and high suicide rate among teenagers and young people. The towns of Mission, Rosebud, St. Francis, and White River give an honest, un-glossed-over picture of life on an Indian reservation in the U.S. today. Don't waste your time on the tourist attractions of Rapid City or the Black Hills; visit the Rosebud and experience real South Dakota prairie life No traveler in the U.S. should miss this.
