Custer was an amazing park. It has everything from mountains and crazy rock formations, to vast prairie filled with amazing wildlife. I was only in the park for a few hours and this is the wildlife I saw. 3 herds of buffalo, dozens of pronghorn, 2 prairie dog towns, an elk, whitetail and mule deer, we even got out of our car to feed wild miles. The entire park looks like something out of a cowboy movie and it was amazing. If you are at least a little bit interested in nature I would highly recommend this wonderful park!
The Custer State Park is by far the best state park that I have ever visited. If you are looking to view animals and enjoy nature this is the place for you. I stayed at Sylvan Lake lodge while visiting the park, the perfect location. You need to take needles highway to get to it, something that should not be missed regardless of whether or not you stay at the lodge. The jeep ride with Casey our guide, was spectacular. It was great to sit back and let someone else do the driving so I could enjoy all the sites as well, plus he takes you to places you can't get to yourself.
Not to be missed! Buffalo round up at Custer State Park will take place on September 25 this year. You will admire close-up the magnificence of the majestic buffaloes. Have breakfast on the prairie and a chuck wagon dinner and your western experience will even be better.
What a cool park...but DONT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR. The parents and the calves are so darn cute, but can butt you and do real damage. Be careful. Enjoy the drive and remember the history of Custer's last stand.
We always do the wildlife loop when we are in town as our kids just love to feed the burrows. We always make a special stop to get bread so we can feed them. They were having unusually warm weather in February so we decided to come and it was great since it wasnt as busy as it is in the summer months.
When you pay your entrance fee your ticket is good for 7 days so I went in through the needles side going to Deadwood and on my way home (from Keystone) i went through the wild life loop road. If you are in the area this is a must. You get to see nature at its best. Animals from donkey's, buffalo, deer... they have a nice visitors center and is worth a stop. It has restrooms, maps and they also tell you where all the animals are along your dirve. I will definetly visit again when I am in the area.
The Custer State Park is by far the best state park that I have ever visited. The closet thing to the wildlife viewing and scenery that I have ever experienced would be Yellowstone or Glacier National Parks. Well worth the time to visit if you are in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Pairs well with and is a short drive from Mount Rushmore. Take the time to visit the park and drive the wildlife tour loop. Plan around the Sturgis biker crowd in mid to late summer, unless you are into that scene and motorcycles.
got up real early to hit the park before heading home and not to far into the park there was a great big buffalo standing in the road. saw lots, even squeezed through a few. Saw a man feeding wild burrows so we got out and they are so tame they let you pet and feed them, werent even worried about you touching their babies! Saw so many ground hogs, and they are so cute but you can almost run them over! saw antelope, and got great video of everything. nice to watch when i came home. loved it!
Even though we have visited Custer State Park before, we always want to come back. The drive through the park is full of wildlife and beauty. The roads can be a bit tricky if you go in the winter months and depending on how much snow they have depends on whether or not some of the roads are closed. We were lucky on the day we went through...hardly any snow and the roads were dry and open...except for Needles Highway. The many tunnels and switchbacks are fun and a little scary. One tunnel you can even see Mt. Rushmore when driving through it...really awesome! The bison herds were all over the park...mainly on the wildlife loop...where you'll be able to get great pictures. Some don't even want to get off the road! But, don't get out of your car...they can run really fast! Remember, they're wild animals! Seen deer, turkeys, the wild burros, a coyote, pronghorns and several different birds...even an eagle. The park has many different types of scenery. From forested hills to gently rolling hills to prairie. Take the time to drive through...you won't be disappointed!
I visited South Dakota and spent some time in the Black Hills. I paid the fee to visit Custer State Park and drove around within the park for a few hours. I didn't really see anything different that I had already seen in the other areas of the Black Hills. If you are short on money, you could get by without entering the park, IMHO.
